2008 X3si high pitched whistle at idle/stalls

Hoping someone can help. We've already got about $2500 into this problem. After car is warmed up, very rough idle and/or stalls. Stopping quick will guarantee a stall, slowly deceleration will usually avoid it. The high pitched whistle sound is at idle and will go away when step on gas. The SES light is on.

Local mechanic has replaced Valve gasket, coils, fuel injectors and did a smoke test (no leaks found). Says we have to run very thick oil?

Local BMW says he doubts its the crankcase vent system because they rarely see them fail.

Anyone have this problem on an X3 and fix it?

What codes are returned with the check engine light? Were the VANOS solenoids replaced?

I had a similar sound and behavior on my 2008 that went away when the VANOS solenoids were replaced. But, there was a specific error code present that stated it was a VANOS problem.

The e90 3-series has the same engine. Do a Google search on e90 VANOS solenoid or e90 high pitched whistle.

Thanks Solenoids have not been replaced and it looks like something we can do ourselves..

The local guy said there weren't any codes but its our first time going there... I just bought the C110 code reader to see if it will help us to figure it out.

So did you ever have it into the BMW dealer to have them diagnose the problem?

The C110 is great. It will read BMW codes that generic ODB readers will not see. It saved me a bundle on reading error codes that I could DIY repair.

Depending upon mileage, your belt tensioner pulley could also be making a noise if it has not been replaced. But that would not account for the surging.
