Big Pete's ED, Ch.2 Delivery

FACTORY TOUR
We toured the 3-series Munich factory on Thursday evening, which was previously arranged by my dealer two months ahead of time. The factory tour was interesting but only a partial tour as portions of the assembly process were unavailable due to some retooling that was underway. However, we did tour one of the development labs and to our surprise, technicians were working on V-10 engines for the new M5!! One V-10 was on the long-term test stand and, even from behind glass, it sounded ferocious!!

DELIVERY
We arrived at the Delivery Center Friday the 12th at 8:30am, and after a quick coffee, we were greeted by the Delivery Manager and proceeded to the “Introduction”. While this new Delivery Center is new and visually appealing, I chide BMW for not having a gift shop. We had to drive back to the Niederlassung showroom to shop for some unique BMW clothing and gifts. In any event, the delivery went rather quickly with the majority of the time spent equally on the operations of the I-Drive / Nav system and SMG. After the obligatory warnings from the Delivery Manager:
1. Do not exceed 100 MPH or 4000 RPM for the first 1,200 miles
2. Do not drive in the left lane, except to pass
Delivery Complete….Let the touring begin….

OOPS... Honestly though, where's the logic behind that one? I don't see the point. And I thought it was only 4K rpm, not 100 mph. That's impossible. Really.

What would be the reverse logic of that advice? "Drive in the left (LHD: overtaking) lane even if you are not overtaking"? I think the delivery manager's advice was perfectly sound.

IIRC BMW sets recommended speed limits during break-in which are independent of engine rpm. The whole drivetrain has to bed in, not just the motor. And depending on where you're going and the time of year, it will sometimes be impossible to get to 100 mph without recklessly endangering other people's lives...

Big Pete, That is one sweet set of wheels. I really like the color, I am debating on white, gray, or silver. I can't wait to see all the pics.

I didn't mean that we should drive in the left hand lane all the time by any means- but restricting us from driving there at all sounded weird. I passed occasionally on small roads where I was probably driving 40-50 mph ish. That's not over those limits. Also my delivery woman didn't mention 100mph- just 4K rpm. I was mostly on the twisties through Austria for the major part of my break-in, so I don't think I put too much stress on my new machine anyway.

Just to clarify, the Delivery Manager was somewhat serious about the speed and rev limits, and I vaguely recall similar limits with my 2000 540i.

However, he was more glib about driving in the left lane. As I recall, he explained that Americans are not used to driving so fast and will likely be shocked to recognize vehicles fast approaching at speeds in excess of 100 MPH. As I mentioned, I was driving in the 90's and was blown away by cars driving much faster than that.

Left lane warning

The reason for the "left lane" warning is that 1) Americans tend to regard the left lane as an optional, smoother lane to drive in, even if they are moving slower than other traffic and 2) many cars on the autobaun will be going 50 to 100 mph faster than you (no kidding). That's a closing speed of only a few seconds - much too quick to get out of the way, even IF you see them coming! So stay in the right lane and check carefully for Porsche's before changing lanes!

What "new" delivery center are you referring to?

The new delivery center isn't open yet. It will open as part of BMW Welt in ca. 2 years.

'Tis true - but had to be before 1982, as that's the first time I had E.D. there!

Please heed his advice. Back in 99 I was driving an Audi across Germany and averaging about 125 MPH. I was careful to stay in the right lane whenever possible. However, one time I was a little too slow getting back in the right lane. I thought it wouldn't be a big deal since I was checking my rear view mirror very frequently. However, in only a few seconds a Porsche 911 Turbo had gained on me and was madly flashing his lights at me. I estimate he must have been cruising at least 175 MPH to get on my tail that quickly. Fortunately he did not rear-end my A4 and you can bet I was in the right lane like a shot. (Please don't make the same mistake I made. )

Another piece of advice that they should have given you:

3. Never NEVER pass in the right hand lane on the autobahn.

This is because if somebody needs to get into the right lane in a hurry (like I did), you need to be certain that nobody is passing you on the right hand side. In fact, it may even be illegal to pass on the right on the autobahn.

Its all very true. Driving the Autobahn takes a lot of concentration and attention, and its only safe if everybody is following the rules.

How old is the "new" delivery center?

My memory is rapidly fading, but the one I saw in 2003 (and which still exists) seemed very similar to the one being used in 1989. But maybe the layout was similar, but in a different location. When did the current ("new") one open?
