Not sure if the convertibles use the same battery as the sedan. You might call the dealer parts department and ask for part number for both and if the part number is the same, you are in business. I would think the batteries would be the same though.

Thanks guys

I also had a dead battery. I called the local dealership in Seattle, and they were asking for $215. I called my nearest autozone and asked for the 49-DL. They claimed it wouldn't fit on my car, but I told them I will get it anyway.

Just came back from the store and installed the battery ($89.99). It fit in the housing cleanly. Fired up the engine and it was all good.

Thanks for all your help. I save over $100.

This thread is relevant to my interests. Twice in one month, I've had the battery die on me. This was mainly due to human error, as I left the blinker activated while the car was off and it drained the battery. I'm not sure if the battery was on its last legs anyway (got the 2003 325i used 4/07), but I got a quote from the dealer for a battery and it's 170 bucks here, so if I were to get the duralast battery, it would only be a 30 dollar discount.

Regardless, this is great information to have and I have bookmarked this thread. Thanks for all of the info!

I took delivery of my 325i on 07 NOV 2000. The battery got a little weak on 12 JUN 2008. The battery died on 14 JUN 2008. I found, as many of you have already, that you will have difficulty at parts houses obtaining a replacement. With no stealership parts dept. open on Sat, I resorted to calling around. I was not impressed. I then got the bright idea to search here...and........tah dahhhhhhhh!!!!!!!!!!! Thank you so much! I paid $81.82, after I returned the core, at Autozone for the 49-DL. The battery fit...the vent hose kit supplied worked with the factory vent hose...and my car started great! Thanks again everyone! :-)

mine went out today in my 99 e46. no warning at all, no slow cranking nothing. didnt want to turn over this mornig, i called AAA they ran a battery test and said it was a bad cell, gave me a jump, i cruised on down to autozone and bought a duralast 48-DL for $96. So i think the prices went up. the 49-DL was the same price.

Good info. Thx everyone.

Mine just died recently too. I took the battery to auto zone and they charged it right back out, but I was still getting the black indicator.

Anyways, the car did start once, but that was about it. It died again.

I will be getting the 49-DL today.

Thumbs up 1999 323i (E46) Battery Replacement

My battery went dead today and I looked for the replacement on several auto parts stores' online sites with no success. I finally looked on Bimmerfest and saw that the DuraLast DL 49 was the best replacement with AutoZone being the best place to get it. I called them, they had it so I took out the old one and went to pick it up. Much to my surprise the clerk was VERY helpful and helped me to realize that the battery I had taken in was a DL 48. The DL 49 was the same price at $89.99, but with more CCA/CA but was 3 inches longer. I had not measured the space before leaving to the store so I called my wife so she could verify available space. At 13 3/4 inches the DL 49 was a perfect fit. BEST NEWS: the battery I took in was purchased at AutoZone about five years ago and was still under warranty, so I got a pro-rated amount back of $12.86, AND a military discount of $7 and change, so final price with core charge and taxes was less than $75. Thanks everyone who contributed, and AutoZone rocks!!!

Canada has 'em too!!

Hey folks.

Just thought I'd chime in and let the Canadians know that size 49 batteries are also available in Canada from Partsource. Just ask for a vented size 49 battery and they'll be able to find it for you. It costs $114 and you get a $10 rebate if you drop off your old battery - a sweet savings over the $210 OEM battery!

Just put mine in a couple days ago and my 325i has been starting beautifully even in the -15 degree celcius temperatures we've been having. The battery itself is slightly bigger than the OEM one, but there is extra room in the battery compartment so it fits perfectly. The vent hose also fits perfectly.

Very happy camper!

Sam

Thanks, saved me $$$ today

I just wanted to say thanks to the OP. Guide worked as described : 49-DL from Autozone, removal of plastic retainer(?) to accomodate the bigger battery, and the spacer to allow the hold-down clamp to reach the battery. The plastic cap for the Positive terminal was even compatible from the original BMW battery to the new (Duralast) one. Vent tube was trimmed and together with the provided fitting was a perfect match to the vent tube attached to the car body.

I had a harder time removing the battery tray (Coupe, not sure if that matters any) than the actual swap of the battery itself.

Thanks,
Paolo

What Happened To the Battery Light?

What happened to the battery light??

I have an 02 with 27K...the battery's lasted 7 years. That's pretty good. I see a lot about the 49 DL, and Autozone crossreferences the stock battery to a more expensive 94R DLG. Can I go the cheaper route without upset??

Thanks,
Lansing

Yes... the 49DL actually has a higher capacity than the stock battery, so you will be fine.

It's days like this I just love the internet...

Battery died on my beloved zhp today, and I about fell over when I saw what they wanted for an OE battery. Happened upon this thread, ran down to Autozone and grabbed a 49-DL for $89, and my beloved zhp is back on the road in 10 minutes. Funny thing is I think this battery actually fits better than the OE. It's a little shorter than the OE, so I just cut 4" round peice of 1/4 cork and used it as a shim under the top plate. Perfect.

Kudos to the OP. You saved me some serious change today...

Hockeynut, I have the 2004 Cic, did the 49Dl work for you?

Answer, the 49DL will not fit the Cic, I had to return the 49DL for a 94R-DLG $151.01.

The great thing is that the battery comes with an 800 number for a free jump for 3 years.

The Duralast 49DL does NOT fit E46 (325Ci) Convertible!!

Hi All, Lots of recommendations for the Duralast 49DL so I went out and got one $89.99 plus $12 core at Autozone. I have a 2003 325Ci convertible. Unlike the sedan this battery area does NOT have a tie down clamp across the top of the battery and it DOES have a metal battery tray which is only 12 3/4 inches in length. The Duralast 49DL is 13 1/4 inches long!! I went back and got the Duralast 94R for $139.99. Yes it is more money and it has slightly fewer CCA and RC but it fits perfectly. Keep the original vent elbow, vent tube and the positive terminal cover; all can be re-used on the 94R without any modifications. The battery from Autozone is here and here is a picture of the finished job.

Just completed Duralast 49-DL replacement on my 2003 330Ci Coupe. Perfect fit. No need for shim or any other adjustment, I just cranked down the top plate on the bracket with a #3 phillips. The salesman at AutoZone warned me that the 49-DL is not a "deep charge" battery and that I would have trouble with cold starts, but that smells like BS to me. $89.99 plus $5.00 core charge.

Lol, total BS. My battery died yesterday morning so I went out and picked up the 49DL. ($98 with tax and after core refund) Turns out the battery I was replacing was already a 49DL so apparently the previous owner or his/her tech knew about this. That battery had absolutely no problem starting my car in temps down to -10F. (Road trip to northern Nevada in January, I've never seen those temps here in SoCal...)

Lifetime of the battery rating or lifetime as in they'll replace it for free when it dies in 6 years? I've never heard of a battery with a flat-out lifdetime warranty...

Rumor or costly necessity?

I've read the posts regarding replacing the 49 DL battery into a e46 BMW and would really like to try this on my car. However, the BMW dealership is telling me that only a BMW battery will sync correctly with my car's computer. They told me that if I replace it with any other battery without resetting the computer, then my alternator will burn out in 3 weeks. Has anyone else heard this line? It sounds like crap to me, based on what I have read here, but I really need to make sure. Not sure how much they might charge me for a new alternator... grr...

Thanks!
