Sent my email today- got the fingers crossed. I'm not even sure what my mileage is since I can't read Hyroglyphics (60 something?).
-Why is it that some here are getting it for free, some paying labor and some poor slobs having to pay 50%? Curious...

I was having a problem with my pixels/gas gauge a few weeks ago - now its seems to have completely disappeared. Only thing that has changed is that its warmer out, and there has been less rain so its less humid.

Anyone out there see a correlation between pixel failure and humidity?

How is it that some people are getting different deals from BMW NA? Some are getting 100% of the part covered and some get 50%. Some have to pay for 30 minutes of labor and some are 90. Has anybody figured out BMW's reasoning?

Does anyone know who to contact in Australia for pixel replacement?

I am here near Sydney Australia. I have a 535 end of 96 and yes... like all beemers - the pixels are getting pretty ratty on it.

Does anyone know who I would contact here in Australia and also given the car is now about 10 years old... who could replace it.

Thanks.

I know this is a long thread to read but to summarize: BMWNA handles the instrument cluster replacement on a case by case basis. You may get it for free or at half-price. I have no idea the criteria by which they judge.

As far as the labor to remove and install the new cluster, that is entirely up to the dealership who performs the service for you.

I know it is long, but read through this whole thread. Within are other alternative to getting the pixels fixed. Even our brother's to the north (Canada) cannot get this deal we get for whatever reason. Also, try searching within the E39 forum only for pixel repair.

I was told by the Mechanic, at my dealership that as long as the car was under warranty
it would get replaced only if, the custumer complains about it, So I did, since i only have a couple of months left, i complained about it and they fixed everything for Free, no labour no nothing, and since it had to get the master cylinder replaced they gave a 06 325i
for 4 days, but I definitely love my 5 series over 3 series,

I think that everyone has a different experience. My BMW dealer said to forget about messing with BMWNA and that they would just go ahead and replace it for me only paying labor...

---------------

First, send an email outlining your problem, something like:

I have a (Year & Model BMW) and a number of pixels in the instrument cluster either function sporadically or no longer function at all. Does BMWNA have a repair/replacement program in place for issues such as this?

(You don't have to type word for word, but you get the picture. ASK, don't demand!!)

Send the email to:

> Leonora Vlaovich
> Customer Relations Coordinator
> BMW of North America, LLC
> 201-573-7742 (phone)
> 201-930-8362 (fax)
> Leonora.Vlaovich@bmwna.com

---------------

Just wanted to let everyone know that Leonora is still the proper contact to initiate this process. I emailed her on 6/18 and recieved the typical "more info" response from her on 6/20.

So far so good! I'd be amazed if they offer any money to replace the cluster on my 97 540i w/ 128,000 miles but I figure it's worth a shot...

Thumbs up As the ORGINAL POSTER !!!

As the original poster of this Pixel Repair thread, I am excited to see that so many of us in the Bimmer community, although plagued by this damn dash problem, have had them repaired or in the process of repair. It's definitely worth the 1 hour labor charge to correct this issue and not pay the $1000.00 fee that BMW would charge without the BMWNA assistance.

Good luck to all and keep up with it.

Dave

I had been having an intermittent problem - brought it in to the dealer (and of course pixels were working then) but they said it was a known problem and they replaced it free (under CPO) without me having to contact BMWNA.

As a follow-up, I heard back from BMWNA today (6/21 after submitting my first email on 6/18) and they offered to cover 50% of the cost of the part for my 97 540i AND my 01 X5 4.4i

They were particullary interested in what BMW's I've personally bought in the past from a BMW dealer and what vehicles I've had serviced at BMW dealers in the past. I've owned a bunch, and it took me a little while to find the right vehicle before they made me an offer. I definately think the offer is based on 1) if you ever bought a car from a BMW dealer and 2) if you have ever had your car serviced at BMW. Apparently I only satisified the equation enougth to get 50% credit.

Once they extended me the 50% credit on the 540, they very quickly did the same on X5 so I think it has nothing to do neccesarily with what car you currently own or are claming!!

Thanks alot guys, this thread just saved me over $600.

PS: I also asked about the MID display and they said the dealer would have to inspect it and conclude that it was "beyond legible" to qualify.

I've never puchased from the dealer or serviced at the dealer w/ my past 2 BMWs, they gave me 100% part 0% labor.

I just got my second email asking me for more info and to make an appt with the dealership. This is progress!

Does anyone know if the car still needs to be under warranty (CPO) for this to get fixed?

My CPO warranty ended last year.... I would assume that BMWNA would know that before asking me to take it in..

I sent an e-mail to Leonora at BMWNA a week ago and haven't heard back from her. What is the typical response time? Should I send her a second e-mail?

It took me @2 weeks before I heard anything. Then she responded and it took about another week-or-so before I got another response from her co-worker.

All, I took my '99 540i to the dealership this morning and they inspected the pixel lights and decided to replace for only $99 (labor fee).

update on my pixel problem. Well after sending multiple emails to Lenora since February with no response I gave bmwna a call about a month ago. Well after bringing in my 540 to the dealer for them to verify the pixels were in fact dead last week they called me back and advised they would pay 100% parts and 0% labor. WOOHHOOO. only took about 6 months but at least now i will be able to see how many miles are on my car, the temp, and whatever is currently in the center mid. as for why everyone has had differant expieriences with price i argee with zolt3c they did ask several questions how many bmw's i have owned and currently owened and if i bought them from the dealership. The rep that i spoke with did say she would speak to the bmw customer loyalty team to determine what perchantage they would pick up. so i guess its just that. its whoever in the customer loyalty team makes a decision on whether or not you will purchase another bmw in the future.
