Found these, let me know if you want more. Looks just like a E46 from the side... Yes/No?

Why look at spy pics when you can see full press images at bmw.com or bmwusa.com?

Because the press images don't give an accurate impression of the size of the car, nor "real-world" angles, plus not a big fan of the color from the press photos at the official BMW USA press site nor the German press site, which has incredibly high-res shots... just what I heard

I agree, the 5 series is absolutely on fire in Black, and I'm not just talking about the heated seats. That 'purpleish' color from the spy pics looks good as well.

E90

BMW has rosy headlines in their press releases about new sales numbers, but take away the X3 and the Mini, and its a completely different story. Every one of the cars designed under Bangles leadership is down significantly year-over-year in sales. Here's the numbers, straight from BMW NA. These are total 2004 vs. 2003:

Z4 - down 32.3%
7 Series - down 21%
5 Series - down 9.3%

Sales reports from competitors indicate that this is not an industry-wide problem in the U.S. For example, Audi sales of the A8 were up 57.4%, and they actually outsold the 7 Series in 2004. Mercedes also reported S Class sales were up 3.5%.

Here's what I am getting at: If the 3 Series follows the pattern of the Z4, 7 Series and 5 Series, BMW is going to be in huge trouble. Not only do they risk losing sales to Audi, Mercedes. . . . but they risk losing the core group of enthusiasts that are 3 Series buyers. I can't imagine BMW would keep Bangle and van Hooydonk around if the 3 Series follows the pattern of the other "new era" cars.

Ditto!

(Adding usefully to the discussion...not).

I think metallic black with the coffee-colored leather is gorgeous in the 5-series. But then I like the Bangle cars.

Doesn't this assume that the design of the cars is the cause of their slow sales?

Reuters UK is reporting there are 40,000 preorder for the E90 in North America alone,

http://www.reuters.co.uk/newsArticle...toryID=7245124

CAR magazine(Best Car Magazine in the WORLD [from UK[) in their Jan. had a piece about their private preview of the E90. They said basically the car is easy on the eyes in person. They also made the prediction, more or less, that it would be just as much a success as the current E46.

BMW is readying the X7 & X5 replacement. Their sales figures indicated that while there 'car' sales were down, their SUV were up by a healthy margin. With the introduction of the brand new X7, and the Range Rover aging (also not to mention alot of the parts are from the BMW parts bin) the X7 should go over well in the US. The X5 replacement will remain a favorite among enthusiasts and soccer moms alike, especially considering how 'vanilla' the new ML is, the RX 330 is aging, and Audi's SUV's are years away.

The 1 series intro to the US will change BMW forever. The 1 series shares many parts from the forthcoming E90 and will represent the best 'value BMW has to offer. Remember BMW learned its lesson from the E36 hatch in the US. BMW exec's have said that the 1 series is NOT coming to the US as a hatch, it will look much better than the pictures you are probaly familar with. The car gets glowing reviews from the Automotive Press, the 1 series made CAR magazines top Performance car of the year (along with the 911 997, Ford GT, Noble M400 & the Lotus Ellise). The car will slot in the low-mid $20K's & the high $20k's. Hmmm, Honda Accord, Toyota Camry, Mazda 6, or a BMW with BMW dealer service?

Rumor has it that Apple is developing the operating system for the next iDrive in the coming 7 series, that, coupled with Bangle's 'demotion-promotion' will likely result in a brighter future for the next 7 (side note- 7 series out-sold S-calss' in Germany as of late)

As for the E90:

From CAR Jan. 05... "...in the company of a Mercedes C-class or even the attention-seeking facelifted Audi A4, the new 3 series has more depth, more intrigue. It has the presence of a mini 7-series, and bluff nose will be even more intimidating than the BMW norm, when it's six inches off your back bumperr at 70 m.p.h." (23, McNamara, Phil).

"Dynamically the 3 series is is set to be a wolf in (black) sheeps clothing: top of the class like the swotty Ms. Simpson" (23, McNamara, Phil)

"BMW claims that the E90's handling and stability ECLIPSE (emph. add.) the predecessor's, and says chassis weight has not been increased." (26, McNamara, Phil)

"Every engine achieves the holy grail of more grunt while sipping less fuel, says BMW." (28, McNamara, Phil)

"The new engine (3.0 L from 330i) weighs around 161kg, whereas Merc's new3.5 V6 weighs 240kg." (also bound for ML 350) (28, McNamara, Phil)

"Peak outputs are 258bhp and 221lb ft....The 2.5-litre six, which kicks out 218bhp and 184lb ft..." (28, McNamara, Phil).

So while BMW's may be failing at producing eye-candy, they are still producing the most driving-enthusiast oriented car for every-day driving available, and they are also poised to grow at a very healthly pace in not only the US market, but the World Auto Market as a whole.

So, it would be nice to hear some praise for the engineers, not just bashing of the designs and the 'doom' that awaits BMW.

Just my humble opinion,
Jim

Especially the rear and the interior.

And just a couple days ago, I parked my car on the street, and went across to get a drink from Starbucks. As I was walking back, I saw a couple drooling over my car. Looking at it inside and out. I had just washed it, and it was cloudy, bringing the best out of Topaz Blue.

I just realized how lucky I am to have an E46, and intend to keep it for many years.

I love the "Bangled" 5 and 7 series, but IMHO, the 6 looks too generically American and from what I've seen of the new 3, it looks like what you'd get if you stuck a Pontiac Grand Am front end on a Toyota Corolla rear. I feel like I lucked out getting one the last good 3's. Oh well..... maybe it will look better in person or a 5 will be my next lease

Correction

Just wanted to make a correction on my earlier post. . . . the Audi A8/S8 did NOT outsell the 7 Series last year - I was looking at the wrong number. However, the Audi sales are up 57.4% in 2004 vs. 2003.

I was wondering about this because if it really did outsell the 7-series I have no clue where they all are. In my daily travels I regularly see 5 to 6 7-series a day while I'm lucky if I see 1 A8 in a month.

All rumors at the moment. The rumor has it that there'll only be one 2-door body and it will have a retractable roof. But it was again denied by Autobild (which is the least reliable car magazine in Germany, IMO)

All the information is indicating that there will be a Coupe and a Cabriolet.
