Instrument cluster and ambient lighting?.

I recently noticed that the instrument cluster associated switches and ambient lighting in my 2005 X5 4.4 is substantially dimmer than other BMW model cars. Yes the serrated dial switch that controls brightness is turned up all the way.

An inspection of a 2004 325, my brother in laws 2001 740iL, and my neighbors 2001 740iL revealed that the instrument cluster and the leds (ambient lighting) floods the front cockpit with light as it was designed to do. When you compare these BMWs with my 2005 X5 what I found was the instrument lighting on these other vehicles is much brighter

This inspection lead me to the conclusion that the instrument cluster, associated switches and ambient lighting in the cockpit and front seat area is dim in comparison. Driver and passenger front door handle LEDs provide almost no light to door handles. The rear door handle LEDs and other control switches are much brighter by comparison.

Anyone else notice this? Or is this par for the course in the X5

The instrument cluster and ambient lights in my X are noticeably dimmer than in my 3'er. There was another individual who commented on this a couple of months back - do a search for that thread. The instrument lights in my '84 190E MBZ are even dimmer

Edit: LOL, I did a search and THAT individual was YOU!!!

Still hoping that others have noticed this and wish to comment, or know of a fix. The dealership acknowledge that
there was indeed a difference and has decided to look into it
and give a report.

Only one guess needed. "That's not a problem, it's an undocumented feature "

RE: Only one guess needed. "That's not a problem, it's an undocumented feature

Actually (according the dealer) it's an undocumented CHANGE. Thats to bad because I personally liked the brightness of the instrument cluster and ambient lighting in the other model BMW's that share that design. The 01,02,03,04, 3 and 5 series and the earlier 01 7 series had this brightness not found in any X5. If i could find a way to change it i would.

At any rate I appreciate the comments from all, and would especially like to thank
UCrewX5 for maintaining a great site. I'm learning a lot.

Now you have me wondering if this CHANGE carries over to the recently introduced models (X3 and new 5 series). Were you able to check these cars? I guess you'd have to go to the dealership after dark! LOL

No. I did not check these models. My comrarison was done on cars with an
instrument cluster that was the same as the X5. Then again there may be some differences in the X5's electronics although they may look the same. The X3 may have the same instrument cluster but since I did not have an X3 I didn't check them. And yes one would need to go to the dealership after dark, or ask other owners of BMW's.

I have checked other X5's 03s,and 04s. They look the same. This is my personal gripe.
and it may not matter to others but after having seen other models and knowing other BMW owners that have so much more light intensity I would like to have the option of more light rather than being stuck with a design difference that I personally do not like. I'm just curious why the design difference in cars that appear to have the same instrument cluster?
