Question ? about replacing burned out head light bulb

While driving my 2001 325ci (w/ non zeon headlights) my left side head light burned out (Both my high beams work). My question is can I replace the bulb myself? I am not the most nimble with tools, but would hate the pay the dealer $50 to charge a bulb if I can do it myself?

Any adivse appreciated!

Agreed, you can do it. I have and am not mechanically savvy. However, the high beam on the driver's side is much more akward - you have to really remove the air intake to get it in and out - unless you have REALLY small hands.

Replacing headlight

Its easy once you figure out the German logic for the locking ring that holds the bulb. Nothing in the manual. Be prepared to replace the other headlight. Mine both went out a week apart. In an emergency, unless they've changed since the 2000 model, the high beam and low beam bulbs are the same. Put one of the high beams in as a temporary replacement.

Question German logic for the locking ring that holds the bulb?

We want to replace the headlamp bulbs on 2001 325i, but we are stumped. We have been fidgeting and fumbling with the locking ring, but can't seem to get the right twist remove the ring and the bulb. We are afraid of snapping the plastic and so have not used any metal tools, but just aren't able to get the right torque or movement to get the ring off with our bare hands. Suggestions welcome!!!

Be forcefull and m,ake sure you are turning the correct way. if you shine a flashlight in there and look at the holes in the locking ring, you will see the correct way to turn. It is probably just a bit stuck becasue it has never been changed.

I bought some new light bulbs I want to try, but can't for the life of me figure out how to do it. I've consulted the owner's manual, but the picture is confusing and I can't even find what they are pointing to! I wish there was a guide online showing how to do this. Any hints?

The bulbs are held in by locking rings. Turn the ring and then pull out (towards the engine). Take out old H7 bulb, insert new one (do not touch bulb with fingers) and installation is the reverse. Easy.

i've got a bulb to replace on my 540. Assuming BMW did not go out and design a totally new headlight concept for the 5-series, where did you go for your replacement bulb? Autozone? Online? Does it matter?

Thanks,

<90

Yes. And if you ask nicely they will probably even change it for you.
