Ultimate Driving Machine made the ultimate sacrifice

I truly believe I am one lucky S.O.B. I owe my life to the Germans...they make one tough car. If I was driving any other sh1tbox, I'd be a dead man. This accident was three weeks ago.

I was going home at 2:15 AM in the rain, when a 97 GMC Jimmy ran a red light and drove in front of me...I T-boned his passenger side at 50 mph. I walked away (limping) with a broken right foot (5th metatarsal) and a cracked rib. The passenger in the GMC wasn't so lucky. She ended up in a coma.

Wow... I am glad that you walked away from this. It's unfortunate what happened but what is important is that you were able to walk away. I wish you a speedy and healthy recovery without any adverse affects in the future from the injuries. I also hope that the lady in the GMC will be ok. Cars can be replaced, but human life cannot.

Your car held up quite well for a 50 mph impact, another testament to German engineering. Once again I hope that everything works out for you and I'm happy you were ok.

Holy mother, I can't believe you walked away as good as you did with your car in that shape! That looks awful. Come to think of it, when i totaled my old 325 it looked pretty much identical (ironically the accident was caused by a lady running a red light as well!). Thank God you're alright. Please update on that passenger.

Holy cr@p, I'm glad to hear you made it out in one piece and the car sacrificed itself instead of you. Best of luck in your recovery.

You're a lucky man, and it looks like your car did a great job of protecting you.

Just curious, how many miles on those front tires? It's prolly just the picture....

Wonderful to hear you are ok. The pictures are amazing, almost looks like the car had no damage from the A-pillar back.

Glad to hear you are Ok. After looking at the inside of your car I was wondering why the other airbags did not deploy?

I hope Ms. Jimmy comes out of it okay, and congratulations on practically walking away from that!

What did it feel like hitting that airbag? Do you even remember the moment?

Whew.

I know the feeling. My 92 325 quite possibly saved my life. T-boned a guardrail on my drivers side door at 60+ mph. Ended up with a shattered elbow and a severely bruised leg. Sounds like you are quite lucky...glad you are ok.

I think if I didn't have my seatbelt on, I would have hit the windshield with my face or gone through....My hip area is all bruised from the lap belt...The airbag hit me like a ton of bricks...I couldn't breathe for a few seconds which scared me a little bit...I had to get out of the car to see if I could walk. I heard the other driver yelling "help me!" I walked over and I thought the passenger was dead. She didn't move and she had her eyes open, looking straight up....

Before the accident, the other driver (21 years old) picked up his girlfriend from the Phoenix airport and was going home. (her flight had been delayed) He said he was looking down at his gas gauge when he was hit. He said he just wasn't paying attention. He went to the hospital on a backboard, so I don't know if he was DUI. They took his blood and urine at the hospital.

It's really amazing how these BMW's hold up. The sides of the car and the interior are intact...You can open and close both doors like nothing happened.

I'll post any updates......thanks

Is your car at Cactus Towing in Mesa? What a dump; I hate that place. My Lexus was taken there after I wrecked it in November.

Did you leave the doors ajar when taking the pics? It looked like the doors couldn't close and the whole chassis had buckled.

Yeah I opened the doors when I took pics of the interior. It is at Cactus towing...but the car now belongs to State Farm. They just settled with me. They offered more than what I was hoping for. (which is good)..Now to look for another car...I think I'll wait until the coupe comes out in the E90. I miss driving the bimmer.

This is truly a testament to one of the reasons why some cars are more expensive than others! All of that engineering that goes into making it a safe car. Makes me feel better about what I drive. Amazing that the doors open and the passenger cabin is nearly in tact!

We're all glad to hear that you are o.k. We're also hoping that the passenger pulls thru o.k.

Johnny

Your hood emblem looks untouched surrounded by all of the wreckage. Crazy!

Yikes - that is one massive impact! The fact that the doors still open 'normally' speaks volumes. Glad to see you made it with only minor injuries, and I really hope the gal you hit comes through okay. What a shame.

As for the airbag, the force of my impact was much smaller so I'm wondering if mine deployed at stage I and yours at stage II. At ~25MPH I could hardly feel it hit my face. Then again the energy involved was substantially less to begin with so I guess it's hard to say.

I agree, these cars are incredibly safe. After two [comparatively minor] accidents in the past year, the invincibility fallacy has passed and there's no question that safety has become top priority when considering a replacement.

Take care & be safe out there...

It's nice you walked away from the crash. You can look forward to a newer, better, and safer car.

I'm surprised that suv didn't roll over after impact.

BMW 3s don't have good ratings for side impacts, but the newer e90s are supposed to be noticeably safer. Goodluck on your search and stay safe!
