Is ZHP really worth it?

Hey everyone, this is my first post. I'll soon be getting a 3 series for the first time. I've heard great reviews about them and now finally I have the chance to own one. I pretty much have my heart set on the 330's for its bigger 3.0 liter engine. But I'm split between the 330xi and the 330ci. I want a car that I can enjoy driving...but I also need it for daily commuting. While the 330ci is attractive for it's sporty looks and the optional ZHP, the 4 doors on the 330xi would be useful. I just want to get some opinions from acutal 3 series owners if you would take the 330ci with it's ZHP package and live with the hassle of 2 doors or take the 330xi for it's practicality. Is the ZHP really worth it or will I have as fun of an experience driving the 330xi?

Why not get a 4-door 330i with ZHP package?

Got a 330i ZHP...I wouldn't consider a 330i. The differences are very small but I am not modder and if the ZHP hadn't been there I would have bought a Japanese car instead. The ZHP was closest thing to a a 4 door M3 I could find.

I now find even the ZHP to be too soft (though my bro-in-laws 325 SP feels like a Buick to me).

You know the 330xi is AWD and the 330ci rear wheel drive. Right?

IF you really need the awd feature than the ZHP option is out the window. As for the ZHP is it worth it? I would answer hell ya! But some beg to differ i dont plan on modding this car so this works to my advantage. Personally i think the kit(spoiler, bumper etc.) short throw tranny, exhaust, and the differential are worth the cost. Then you get more goodies like the interior trim bits like the steering wheel and the alcantara trim inside. As for the coupe i used to have one and i would buy it again, only thing is that i like the look of the sedan a little better. I rarely have back seat passengers so the coupe wasnt a drawback.
One thing about the sedan is that is feels very stiff and solid when compared to the coupe.

Mein Auto: is way too fast
I have to agree with most of what was already said. Go with the 330i Sedan. The coupe's backseat is smaller, and harder for people to get into. The ZHP adds that extra nice engine sound, the M-steering wheel, and a GREAT set of 18" wheels and tires. Plus with the plethora of BMWs that are around now, it's nice to have one that's just a little bit different from what everyone else is driving.

You are in North Carolina. I don't imagine that the All Wheel drive is really necessary by you (I could be wrong). You'll get better handling and a little more fun with the rear wheel drive versions of the car.

Whichever way you go, hurry up because there aren't that many E46's left. And enjoy your new car!!!!!

There are really only two things from the ZHP package that I wish I had, and they're purely cosmetic. The front bumper, and the black headliner.

All the other differences are either not worth it to me (alleged 10bhp, but at the expense of a potential stalling issue), better provided with aftermarket mods (wheels, suspension, exhaust, SSK), or just plain undesirable (alcantara -- especially on the steering wheel... that just seems dumb to me, cheezy cube trim, spoiler).

Of course, all the above is IMHO. YMMV.

I got mine with leather! Really wasnt sure how the alcantara interior would age over the years.

yeah man... what the hell is that?

to the question at hand.... get a 330i with ZHP. you get the utility of 4d at no loss of performance by not getting the coupe.

and YES, the ZHP is worth it. the interior and exterior look sharper, sportier. the mod bits are worth it, specifically the suspension changes, which is not merely 18in wheels all-around... there is definitely a difference between 330i/ci with or without ZHP with respect to turn in, handling and engine responsiveness.

the argument of alcantra v leather being the only reason is ignoring the amount of changes made to the suspension. and considering between the two interiors, well... i ordered alcantra, but got leather as A NO COST option, since the mistake was on the dealer.

can't complain.

my .3145 cents... good luck with the choice and let us know how it turns out.

Jesus H. Christ, when are people gonna learn? Now that most current browsers block popups, maybe the day of the popup are numbered.

Of course, then we'll start seeing more and more of the DHTML "popups" that you can't get rid of without disabling client-side script

Anyhow, back to the subject, I agree that nave560 should be looking at a 330i. And the ZHP option is not worth the extra money, unless you absolutely must have the cloth seats (the only redeeming feature of the ZHP package, IMO). Well, the upgraded tires aren't bad either. So that's two good things about the it.

I agree with most of the above- it seems like gr8330 wants a compromise between the Ci and the i, wants the performance package, and doesn't need the xi as all wheel drive wasn't mentioned. Well, this is exactly what BMW created the ZHP (in four door form) for, and that should be your answer. Great deals are to be had now, so act quick. We all look forward to seeing pictures when you get her home!

330i with ZHP is the best you can do for performance with 4 doors on a 3er. If that is what you're looking for, go for it. My reasons for getting the ZHP, in this order....

1. Handling and suspension - I love the way it feels on the road and corners.
2. Larger wheels and I like the style of them.
3. It looks different (M aero package, interior trim, headliner, larger M steering wheel, etc.)
4. It sounds different. Every time I start the car I'm reminded that this isn't a "typical 3er"
5. A little more powerful (10hp, 8 ft-lbs. torque). Not a big difference but its a nice-to-have.

Its not worth it if you're only looking for one or two of the things above but even if it only had the upgraded suspension, larger wheels/tires, and the exterior cosmetics I would have gone for it....but that's just me.

Also, I like my leather Natural Brown is better than doing the whole interior in alcantara.....but again, that's just me. I have Jet Black and a completely black interior would have been too much for me.

Mein Auto: 330i with ZHP
Another reason to buy a ZHP

Speaking from the perspective of someone living in Bay Area, Cal,

If you don't want to look like one of millions 3ers out there, ZHP truely
stands out from 50 feet away that it is a 330i that means performance.
Without looking at the badge, I suspect anyone can tell a 330 from a 325. Even
with SP for 325 can be had with SP as well.

Besides the ego thing, it is also easier to find your car in the parking lot...
