Goodbye X5, Hello 530i

Well… I finally did it….

Here’s the story…

I got an amazing deal on my X5 when I first leased it…. So good, that I knew I would not be able to work the same deal on a 5 series – so I have been convincing myself that I should be going for an Acura RL, TL or M35 Infiniti or Audi A6…. So I test drove what I could about three weeks ago – but no one was able to get me out of the X5 lease a few months early…

Finally Acura called me back on Friday and said they would do the deal I wanted on the RL…. I decided to call the BMW dealer I worked with on my last 3 cars and asked if it was feasible to expect a deal like the Acura deal (the BMW was a good 5k over the Acura)– to my surprise he said yes….

So I decided to go drive the BMW 530i with Sport Package… Oh boy! What an amazing drive. It was just as fast as the RL, but the handling was incredible – better than my 328i was.

So after some more negotiation, I wound up getting the 5 for less than the RL (lease). And I said good-bye to my beloved X5 and drove home in a new 530i.

It is Silver on Gray, Step, PP, SP, Xenons…. It is a dream come true. It drives like a sportscar. I know it is not super fast, but it is quicker than the X5 was.

So thanks to all you guys for all the help and input on the X5 over the years… I’ll still be lurking, but no more X for me….

Boy will I miss the X. I loved it everytime I got into it. And for three years it treated me well too. No major problems, it kept clean and when I turned it in, it looked new.

Yup the 530i is definately faster than a 3.0 X5. I believe it's on par with the 4.4 though...both have a 0-60 time of 6.9sec. The 545i now is a different story! Enjoy your new ride

I have been reading different 0-60 times listed for the 530i - some list it as 7.2 and some as 6.9.

Regardless, from seat-of-the-pants it seems much faster than the X. However, there is not the low end grunt that my wife's 325 seems to have. But once the 5 is up at speed, the acceleration is great.

One question.... Regarding break-in. The dealer told me "no BMW has an official break in period - so feel free to flog it as much as you want - that is why we can drive them so hard on test drives".... but something about that just does not seem right.... SO I am still driving it easy for now... Thoughts?

I don't seem to understand you...you stated that the 530i was faster than the Acura RL. This is completely untrue...

Do you measure by actual numbers, or by "pants" perception. Cuz there are many cars which feel slow in the "pants", but are really quick otherwise (i.e. Infiniti G35, 2000 S4, Lincoln LS V8).

Congrats Phester! I'm one of the rare individuals that actually likes Bangle's designs, including the (gulp!) 7 series.

Best of luck with the new whip and many, many trouble free miles with it!

I meant seat of my pants feeling. I do realize the RL is actually fater.

Thanks for the reminder

I know I have been absent lately, but work has been an ever increasing nightmare.....

Tax time has approached..... But getting into that 5er every morning and evening makes working that much more worth it!

Thanks for the good words...

I love the 5 series design... I have to admit, when the 7 first came out I was disgusted at what was done to BMW design... But after seeing it on the road for a while, I turned and now think it is a great design... Then came the Z4 and 5 series and I now appreciate the lines...

I got the 5 in Silver to show off those lines too.

I never liked the E65, until it was successfully re-styled this month (to be sold as 750i, etc).

However, from the start, the new 5-series has been my favorite Bangle creation. Congratulations!

Congrats Phester!!

Wow, seems like you're gonna love the 530. When you got a chance post some pics. You're the 3rd ex-RFers to lose the x5 in the last couple wks or so, along with CJ and Driver8. But the thing is all three of you replace it with another bimmer. Nice

Re: breaking in, I would take it easy regardless of what BMW or anyone else says. All machinery needs some kind of initial break-in period.

You need to drive some real sportscars.

Anyway, congrats on the purchase.

Congrats Phil!! I really like the look of the new 5. I test drove the 525i and loved it. I'll bet the 530i is just that much better. Post pics when you get a chance.
