Remote key won't open door - HELP
I have E46 330CI (2002). This morning I went to open the car do using the key remote and it wouldn't do anything. I went and got the spare key and this also wouldn't open the door.
When I opened it using the key in the door (old fashioned I know), the alarm went off and I could stop it. How am I meant to get in the car without using the remote key? Is there a way to stop the alarm when opening the door using the key? Help appreciated. Thanks Mark |

Did you mean you COULDN'T stop the alarm? (You wrote you "could"). One of the key/vehicle memory settings is to disarm the alarm with either just the remote, or remote + key. The default is supposed to be remote + key, but it seems yours might be set to remote only. At least, these are the choices on my '05 330i. The reason some people don't want the key to be able to deactivate the alarm is if someone pops your lock to get into your car...

One of my electronic keys stopped unlocking/locking the doors, yet I could unlock them manually, and drive with the key just fine.
I told my service department about this and they replaced the key with a brand new one under warranty. |

I have the same problem right now, but it happens with both keys. I do not have the alarm. The passenger door unlocks just fine, but the driver's side does not; in fact, when I try to lock or unlock it using the button inside the car, it doesn't work either. However, both keys lock both doors just fine. Any ideas on the problem? I know I have to take it into the dealer, but I wonder if anyone else has had this problem.

While extremely unlikely, it is possible that your key and the EWS antitheft system have gotten out of sync. They use a rolling code scheme that is similar, in principle, to that used by modern garage door openers. It is possible to get the internal counter in the key too far (numerically) from that stored and sync'd with it in the EWS in the car, in which case the car will no longer recognize the key.
This is very unlikely, though, and it should sync back up when you use the key manually. Regardless, the dealer should be able to get it straightened out, and all that may be necessary is recoding the EWS for your existing keys, which is a lot cheaper than new keys
