Question 3 Series (E46) Steptronic

I have the 2000 323 CI with the standard automatic steptronic transmission rated at 170hp/181ft-lb torque. Zero to 60 is around 8 sec.

Are there any data that shows whether driving in the steptronic mode increases the performance?

If not, what are your experiences?

The answer is no.

Step mode is only helpful when you want to change gears on your own for turns.

Mein Auto: is way too fast
Well that's not entirely true. If you put the car into first gear in steptronic mode, it will stay in gear all the way until redline. At that point it will be forced to upshift into 2nd gear. This will probably yield the fastest time accelerations.

(Also I believe if you floor the pedal, you will actually feel a button sort of click as the pedal hits the end of travel, which will prompt the car to accelerate at it's best???).

Regardless, whichever technique yields the fastest 0-60 times was probably used when they measured the 0-60 time in the first place.

Iceman, I agree with you. From my experience, the car seems to go faster when the pedal is floored in stepronic mode. I have raced a few cars from the stop lights with successful results.

Thanks and good luck with your new toy.

No matter what mode you're in, if you push the gas all the way until you feel the click, it will force the car into the lowest gear it can safely get into, and will shift at the redline every time.
