Auto folding mirrors ...

Are they a convenience or a headache?? I am waiting for a price from Vaheh. Seems like you simply swap out the guts and keep the outer shell ...therefore no painting involved?? I looked at the link on X5world. Seems quite straight forward. Any comments from anyone who has them. Is it a cheap motorized unit, smooth, loud...???

Have them on the M5. To be honest they are a gimmick and personally I think its one more thing to go wrong. Would I turn a car down that had them? No, as long as they are working correctly.

I know XXX5 got them on his old 4.4 because he had a very narrow garage opening.

If you are bored with the mods you can go ahead and do it. The motors are not loud, they aren't cheap and when they work they work well.

When I say they don't work....sometimes when you push the button one mirror stays out while the other folds in and vice versa. Just add it to the BMW I-Bus gremlins

Thumbs up I'm not sure I agree it is a gimmick

I had them on '03 M5 and on my '04 X5. I parked in a narrow spot a few times and folding mirrors helped. Also parked on a narrow street where mirrors are frequently whacked - folding helps.

Very helpful depending on the traffic on where you live. I use it more often that I thought - especially when navigating tight spots since everyone around me would rather double park that just drive 5 car spaces ahead and park on a available space on the side of the street....I'd say go for it if you do see a need for it

I have a very narrow garage and use the auto folding mirrors everytime I go in and out.
I wouldn't even consider buying a car without auto folding mirrors now.

If you have a narrow garage, they are a must have.

Good luck,
B

I agree with B-line and I have the same problem. I always fold before entering the garage. Big convenience for me. In my previous X5 I scratched the mirror once.

I think it's more of a show-off item...

I use the fact that my mirrors are stuck out as a good approximation tool when parking, and/or passing real close to other large vehicles or items.

Yeah, you say I'm crazy to use them for that, but for me, even if I had the folding option, I doubt I would ever use it. Parking in narrow spaces is never a problem. My X stays stored 365 days a year in the underground garage on its own reserved spot at 15*C fully protected from bad air, the elements, and crazy people who ding ya.

The guy's car next to mine is a Subaru, and this guy drives it about twice a year. I wish everyone would baby their car this way instead of leaving her out in the cold.

BMW accessories/parts prices are going off the roof. What's going on? They're ripping us off left and right.

What the hell do you go to the store in?

I use my fold ups on the X all the time. The X is the car I can park close and get dinged by other people. My daily parker outside at work. That's why I bought it, as a matter of fact. I didnt want to risk the 5.

I added fold ups from the M5 to the 540 'cause they were just that cool. Since I rarely park it in confined spaces, I rarely use them in the cold cruel world. I do keep them folder up in the garage during the week.

So you don't take your X5 outside at all? 365 days/yr, 24hrs/day in your underground garage?

I don't know what other members make out of that statement, but I feel sorry for you that you can't drive and enjoy your X5 because you are afraid "people will ding ya". And the guy who parks next to you, he must be a dickhead because who would pamper a Subaru? It's like you go out and spend $100 to buy a car cover for your Yugo.

I don't think that price was too far from what TripleX5 paid for his mirrors.

I personally think the mod is well worth the price and plan on doing this myself soon.

Actually, that’s less then what I had paid. At the time (couple years back) folding mirrors was a euro only option and the parts were up there ($), not to mention had to be imported.

I still think the mod is well worth it.

Are we talking about mirrors that fold in when you turn the car off and that flip back out when you re-start or just the ablity to fold the mirrors in with a power switch?

To fold the mirrors in with a switch.
I don't think there is a setting or option that would allow the mirrors to auto-fold in when you turn the car off, or flip back out when you re-start.

I ask because my father-in-law's Lexus does just that. That and the key-in-your-pocket starting is cool.

It's a little square button on the driver's side window controls. Push it in to fold, push again to unfold. It's present on all MY03 with Auto-dimming mirrors options/Premium Package and maybe standard on all MY04+.

To add to IFly's comments, the entire driver's side window switch module is replaced. The new one has the mirror-folding button on it.

It is the small, square button. Push once to fold, again to unfold.

Agree w/ general consensus that power-folding mirrors are extremely useful. I just wish the driver's side mirror folds in a little further (like passenger side)

Well I saw this option today at the dealer. I guess all 04's have this feature standard...at least in Canada anyway! I was impressed with the function of the motor. It's certainly not a cheap retrofit though. I'm not sure how often I would use it. My garage is huge, and if you're parking in a spot where you have to fold your mirrors in, it's probably too tight to park there anyway, not to mention getting in and out of the vehicle!
