Question Whistling noise from steering wheel

I've been noticing a low whistling noise coming from the steering wheel when I turn from left to right, or right to left. It is more audible at lower speed (like when coming out of parking lot or garage) and less audible at higher speeds. It sounds as if something is rubbing against the steering column. I extended the steering out hoping it was rubbing against the cover, but that wasn't it.

I searched the archive and found a few posts about low power steering fluid. The @$#$@@$ manual doesn't say anything about topping off the power steering fluid, and I can't find the reservoir under the hood. Is the reservoir next to the oil filter (with the 8-star cap) that says "ATF Fluid Only"? I checked and the fluid level is halfway between the 1st line and 2nd. Does it mean I need to add more fluid? Or should I take it to the dealer?

Does anybody have this problem happen to your X5? Mine is 4.6is so I have the servotronic power steering, if it helps.

TIA, guys.

I've got the same issue but mine is more like a squeak. It only happens from the range of about 6" to the left to 6" to the right (from center). I'm planning on taking it in since I've also been notcing a slight "click" or "clunk" felt in the steering wheel when going over some sharp bumps (driveway skirts, etc.). I had the front sway bars done several months back but I wonder if something is loose again. I don't know if the two are related however (squeak and click)

IFly, try topping off the power steering fluid and see if the squeal goes away.

It's the one next to the oil filter and has an 8-star cap. Right behind the radiator.

Last week I test drove a 2003 4.6is and heard a low squeaking sound while turning the steering wheel. I tracked it down to something in the steering column rubbing up against the back end of the steering wheel. Or at least where the turning part of the steering wheel meets the bulkhead where the wheel telescopes out from.

It was very annoying and when I went to buy my new 4.8is that was the first thing I listened for and didn't hear anything.
