Mein Auto: 1997 528i (and love it)
Blasted Check Engine Light


I have searched this site and have done almost everything I can to get rid of this light short of putting electrical tape over the top of it and yes I have check my gas cap for tightness. I have a code reader and seen that the pre and post O2 sensors were probably going bad, so I replaced them and reset the light. A few hundred miles later the light came back on with the same codes from the bavarian code reader. Chart 11 E5 "Pre Cat Oxygen Sensor response time Cyl #1-3. and E9" Catalyst efficency below threshold". So I replace the CAT all 1 of them. $700 dollars later and a few hundred miles more the light comes on again with just the E5 code. Soon I expect the E9 code will come on also. Please help!!!!!!!!!!!

on thing to do first is to have someone check the mass air flow sensor. my mechanic has a very expensive computer that does everything along w/ and odb2 reader. he tested my mass air flow sensor and it was bad , that causes your o2 sensors codes to come up. at first i changes my front 2 o2 sensor(bank 1) reset my comp[uter and the check engine came on after 15 miles. checked it again then it said the rear o2's were bad. so i then checked the mass air flow sensor and that rresolved the poblem. i wonder if the front 2 o2's were even bad. 99 540i
