Orient Blue Metallic

Does anyone out there have an E46 in Orient Blue Metallic? I'm planning to repaint my car because in some light the factory Royalblau Metallic takes on a nasty purple cast.

Is Orient Blue a safe bet, or does it suffer from the same problem?

My car looks purple sometimes, in the right (or wrong?) light.

I would never have a car resprayed for something like that though... resprays NEVER look as good as the original factory paint. My advice would be to think about that long and hard before proceeding.

I'd get a new car before respraying due to simple color tastes.

The car is an E30 Touring (yes, I know this is the E46 board!) that I just brought over from Germany.

The paint is 16 years old and could use a re-paint. It's not as hard as you'd think, and--if done right--the results will be far superior to a factory paint job. I just want to make sure that I'm not replacing one purple-y blue with another!

I have an Orient Blue 323i (wife's car now). IMO, it's one of the most gorgeous colors BMW has ever offered. It looks classy, elegant, and never has any unusual color tones - you always know it's blue, and it's simply stunning. It's very dark, but handles being dirty a bit better than black (but not by a whole lot). It has absolutely no purple to it at all.

Along with Carbon Black Metallic, I can't think of a color I'd rather have.

Im a newbie to this site from the uk if everything goes well there should be a pic. of my 320d se in orient blue for you. Looks almost black from here. but otherwise I like it

I LOVE my Orient Blue. Never noticed a purplish tint to it. Some days, it looks like black. I'm sure you know, a dark color is very hard to maintain. If I could do it all ver again, I wouldn't change a thing (well, except to add xenon lights).

I love the color of my car. I know what everyone is saying about the blue/black thing. One of my coworkers thought my car was black for about 2 week until the sun came out and he asked if I traded it for a different one that was BLUE.

I have OB and have looked at it every day for over two years now. But when I see some of the other OB's like on this thread, it just makes me smile even more. I love my OB, dude.

ive got an 05' 330ci ZHP in orient blue ..looks extremely sharp when fully washed..however when dirty can be deceiving and look black...my friends all thought it was a black car when they first took a look at it at night as well

Orient Blue is a very nice looking color especially when clean on a sunny day. Unfortunately it is difficult color to keep clean and swirl free.

I just sold my e30, which was Royalblau, and I too noticed the purplish tint to it. I'm a big fan of using OEM colors (at least one that COULD have been on the car that year), rather than swapping out, but that's just me. Is it possible that the purplish part of the paint was something that happened over time/fading? I was wondering about that when I was considering a repaint of my own car. It might be worth getting a sample painted onto scrap metal to check out in sunlight. It might not be as purple as you think if it's fresh and then clear-coated. Just a thought...

Wow, all these OB pictures look great. I don't see too many around here (MD/DC) and I was considering it, but since I had a similar color on my previous C240, I went with Black Sapphire. OB is definitely a very nice color!

BMW is about to retire OB for good (soon if they haven't already), after many years of availability.

Too bad, I think it's their best and most stunning standard color. It just oozes class and elegance.

I love Orient Blue... i use to want silver, but blue grew on me

Orient Blue is fantastic. It looks like black when it's dark out, but in the sunlight you see how rich the blue is. I don't really notice anything purplish, but it does change colors depending on the light. There are so damn many black and silver cars out there (no offense to their owners) that I think it's much nicer to have a different one. Sleek and awesome. Hurry up and spray it.

IMO Orient is mostly blue but under some lighting conditions it does have a little purple.We have a 2001 330cic in Orient and it is one of my favourite colors,very rich looking.Here is an M3 in Orient.

It was my third choice... by it really, really grew on me.
Oh well… Maybe I’ll be repainting someday too.
