Installing a new gas tank door hinge

I need to install a new gas tank door hinge (part number: O3119-80663) and I can not get the old hinge (partially intact) removed. (I have a 1994 525i.) I purchased the part online and it did not come with any instructions. Does anyone have any advice on how to remove the old part of the hinge still hanging on the gas tank area? I think the new hinge will snap into place on the old gas tank door, but I don't want to just tear the old hinge off and mess up any pieces on the car I may need for the new hinge to snap into place. Any advice is much appreciated...

I just had this happen to me. It's a fairly easy fix, I found a new part at Bimmer Parts Wholesale for $12 and change, plus 5.50 for shipping. The broken bits are clipped into the frame and the fuel door and a a bit of a pain to remove. I used a small flathead screwdriver to depress the tabs and get the broken parts out. I'll update when the part gets here later this week with whether or not it's necessary to save any parts. Best of luck to you.

Kraft, IIRC....i just broke mine all off. Take a look at the new part and look at the attachment points....then you can figure out how to get it off, should be simple. It only took me ~5 minutes to do the job.

I know this is an old thread, but I just broke my door off while trying to use the door to dislodge ice that had gotten under the door. I checked online, found a hinge @ autohausaz for $9.50. I was wondering of those who attempted it, was it difficult removing the old hinge hardware? I'm thinking it just clips in, so it looks like long-nose pliers and maybe a flathead screwdriver should suffice, but figured I'd ask here while I wait for it to ship.

Be aware that the cold will make the job much harder then it should be. If you have a warm place to install this it could save you from breaking another. I just took off a door intact in florida and it was easy. If I were to attempt the same thing in MI I would have broken the hinge.
