New bmw 330cic owner

This is my first post and my first BMW. Anyway found a new 2004 330cic at my local dealer and after trying to locate a titanium silver with gray interior i decided to take the deal and get the 04. Didn't see much difference except dealer discounted the 04. My question is the little light blinks on my rearview mirror but I do not have the alarm system. My dealer wants $495.00 plus install fee. He told me the alarm has a motion detector and asked me what color interior I had so he could match. Just what will I get for $700.00? What does the alarm system do? Thanks!

Others will chime in, but I believe they'll tell you you can get the OEM alarm yourself for about $260 (I think) from Circle BMW or Pacific BMW parts dept. Most feel it is a DIY job, the wiring is already in the car. You install 3 pieces - motion sensor (in the housing that should already be in your car, behind the sunroof - don't know about convertibles), tilt sensor (located in the trunk) and the siren which mounts on the firewall (that's the hard part). I actually had my dealer install the alarm for $425 total (incl. installation) when I got my '05 330i in December. $495 not incl. install is very high. The alarm covers all the doors, trunk, hood, etc, plus motion sensor (also serves as glass breakage sensor) and tow-away (tilt) alarm which can be disabled separately from the rest of the system. Hope this helps.

Edit -- I'm assuming the '04 models were also pre-wired. I'm not sure why your dealer is asking for your interior color since the housing for the motion sensor is already in your car even if you don't have the alarm. Oh, I just noticed -- CONVERTIBLE! Must be some differences there....

Welcome! Awesome car! I think you made a wise decision as the '04 and '05 cabrios are virtually indistinguishable (save for some internal electronic upgrades). They readjusted the options packages, but if you got what you wanted no sweat, you saved some good $$.

I agree about the alarm, $500 is way to high. I mail ordered the kit from Pacific BMW (actually they are 10 minutes from me) and then even had my dealer install it and it was only a little over $300 total (I am not a DIY kind of guy). This is the way to go if you don't want to do it yourself.

Some one will correct me if I'm wrong, however, but I believe the alarm on cabrios does not have the motion sensor. Or maybe it's the separate "shock" (glass) sensor? I know that it lacks something that comes on the sedans/coupes. But the good news is, the alarm kit for cabrios is only like $175 because of the difference.

And post some pics when you get a chance!

What it adds is noise if someone tries to break into your car. BMW security is said to be so good that the only way to steal the car is with a flatbed. If true, the alarm will only make noise as hte car is pulled onto the flatbed, which doesn't get you much.

BTW, since the "clown nose" is already blinking, a thief would have no way to know, other than by shaking the car violently, whether you have the alarm with siren installed. It may be that the blinker is enough deterrence.

Thanks for the info about mail ordering and DIY. Yes it was prewired and the motion sensor is mounted on the floor behind console. Guess it may have a cover that is gray to match carpet. will post pics as soon as i can figure out how to make the smaller (yes new digital camera also) tried to upload but said file was to large.

Weird, I don't think I have this, unless it was already in the car.

Also, if you do install the alarm yourself, note that you still have to go to the dealer to get it activated (this is true for sedans, and I assume that it's still true for convertibles). I seem to recall some people saying that their dealers charged around $50 for activation, but I don't know how much more your dealer would charge.

I know what you mean Very nice!

I love the silver w/grey interior. I haven't seen a lot of them. Also, your amber lights (parking/taillights) are very unique on a 330, they were clear with Sport Package, and clears are now standard I think on all. I like it!

Thanks. My wife had to have silver with gray int. and when we found this one it was had to have it. The only change I would make if I could have found it was add the sport package with the 18" wheel option but hey can't complain with this ride.

Your rims are So much nicer than the 68's I see everywhere, and not too common.

checked circle bmw web site and they have an alarm kit with motion sensor for $375 (retail $495) and a gray housing for $20.00. They also have an alarm without the motion sensor for less than $200

Getthe one with the motion sensors. You can leave your top down with the alarm enabled. Anyone who puts thier hand into the cabin will get quite a rude awakening when it goes off! I just wish I had been able to get those sensors for mine. They don't sell just the sensors.
