E39 (1997 - 2003)
The BMW 5-Series (E39 chassis) was introduced in the United States as a 1997 model year car and lasted until the 2004 when the E60 chassis was released. The United States saw several variations including the 525i, 528i, 530i and 540i. -- View the E39 Wiki

Ive always thought that this topic is kind of hard to determine. I mean, "engine life" or "lifespan" or "mileage expectancy", what does that mean? How many miles before I have to pull a valve cover? Head? Rebore/full rebuild? The International 7.3L diesel in my Ford Excursion should easily go 300k without doing a thing unless something out of the ordinary happens, if not 4-500k. But the M62 usually requires at least pulling the valve covers around 100k, timing chain covers before 200k, but may not need a head gasket replaced before 300k if it doesnt overheat, or could go 400k without needing anything done further down as long as the oil was changed regularly. I think there are many engines that could go 500k+, but the question is how much money does it take to get there?

123k here, running strong. small oil leak, but I haven't even had to add an extra quart of oil since I bought it last september. upgrading the stereo is #1 on my list at this point.

97 528i (m52) with 220,000 and running smooth as silk. Don't get me wrong, I'm always replacing something, but I'm very proactive with my car. So most of the things I replace are still working when I replace them.

Turned 198k this past week....neither the engine or trans have been apart. Replaced seals on front of engine, and of course the valley pan a couple times over the years. And the rear main seal at around 85k miles. Oil/filter changes every 7,500 miles since new, and trans fluid every 30k, with a filter change every 60k.

The 98 528i only has 180k on the clock but my wife's '97 740il with the v8 has almost 290k and still runs strong. All original but very well maintained. My M30 powered e34 had 418k on the clock when I sold it for the the e39 and hopefully it's still on the road.
