330i Front/Rear Shock Replacement

Hey Guys,

I'm preparing to replace all 4 shocks (Bilstein Sport) on my 330i. Although I've done a shock replacement on my previous E30, I've never done a shock replacement on and E46 before.

Has anyone here done this replacement who can tell me some things I might need to look out for, or what else should I consider replacing while i'm under there?

Any information would be helpful.

Thanks,
Wosby

Well, it's a lot easier.

Don't break your xenon headlight adjuster up front, but other than that you've got the skills. The nice thing about the E46 is that front struts are just clamped in.

Use at your own risk…

1. Jack up car using front-side jacking point.
2. Put jack stand under A-arm, lower jack a little to put some pressure on the jack stand.
3. Use a 16 mm deep socket w/ a 17 mm open end wrench and remove sway bar arm nut
4. Using an 18 mm socket loosen the lower strut bolt (no need to remove, just loosen)
5. Using a 13 mm socket remove all three strut hat nuts.
6. Raise the jack as high as it will go, the a-arm will stay on the jack stand, while the car raises and the strut hat will lower from the top of the car. This is where you’ll break your xenon auto-leveler arm if you have not disconnected it (passenger’s side only).
7. Grab the strut, twist, pull up and remove.
8. Use a bungy cord to hold your brake rotor in toward the car so it doesn’t flop around and break your brake line.

It really is that easy!! Good luck!!

I made a DIY for changing the shocks/springs out. You can check it out here: http://www.bmw330ci.net/projects/suspension.php and maybe it will give you some guidance.

I would definitely change out your Rear Shock Mounts (RSMs) while you're there! Depending on your mileage other mounts/bearings may need to be replaced, but you might not know until you start taking things apart.
