Refreshed the front end of my car more

Pushing 400,000 miles and my steering rack had reached the "tired" point. Started to get play in it that I couldn't remove any other way. So I ordered a rebuilt rack from rackdoctor. This was my 2nd steering rack from them as I had bought one a few years ago for my wifes 528i. Lifetime warranty should be handy and the rack I bought for the wife's 528i had done great so I figured I would try one for my 2000 323i.

Also I have HAD IT with the damn LF20 pump. I lost count after 10 pumps and Im way to old now to keep climbing under the car and replacing them. So I decided to do the LF30 upgrade while I was installing the new rack.

I know everyone says don't do it as it will cause you to lose the great steering feel of the LF20 weak pump. Since I cherish the way my car drives I decided I wouldn't allow that to happen during my upgrade. After some research I found that was actually a very easy fix. All I had to do was install an adjustable pressure valve inline and presto I control steering assist. Not only that but I designed a variable speed sensitive method to change boost based on speed.

After getting the new rack in and the LF30 pump upgrade I have to say I flat love the car even more now.

No overboosted steering at speeds and I can now turn the wheels in parking lots without fighting the steering wheel. The LF20 may of done fine on the road but it flat sucked even new in parking lots.

If I recover finally from installing the rack and all I'll try to do a howto on the steering pressure solution I came up with.

Anyways I wanted to send out a thumbs up for the rackdoctor on another great rack at a great price and celebrate the permanent removal of the piece of crap lf20 pump. Long live the LF30 !

Thanks

I still have this urge to go outside and sacrifice the old LF20 pump to the bmw gods or something or at least throw a melt it down party. Feels so good to be done with that crappy pump design finally.

Give it a proper Alabama Funeral....soak it in gasoline, and fire a couple rounds of tracer ammo into it....
