Mobile Sat Nav questions

Just got my very first BMW at the ripe old age of 66 and am delighted with it.
It came with a mobile navigation system (Garmin Nuvi 700 series I believe)
There was no SD card with the system, so I downloaded a map from garmin.openstreetmap.nl onto my own card.
The system loads the map, but I am having a few issues with it.
1) It does not recognise a lot of addresses/towns etc
2) No facility for searching by post code
3) It switches itself off quite frequently
So my questions are:
Can I upgrade the software on the device, or do I need/is it possible to change to a newer device?
It has a connector at the base of the unit and standard mobile units have them at the rear

Any advice would be gratefully received

You can get a new Nuvi for not much more than the cost of the map update. The older Nuvi have some memory limitations with the newer bigger maps. A newer unit should mount to the standard garmin ball mount if that is what you have in your car. There was an official BMW accessory Nuvi back in the day.

Thanks Smassey, that's what I thought. Mine is the official BMW accessory with the connector on the base and a fitted connection bracket

Just remembered newer Nuvi may not have that connector at the bottom. The cheaper models have gone to the just the little usb connector. The advantage of keeping the larger connector is it may mute the radio when giving directions. Worst case you will need to remove the block from the ball, mount the new nuvi to the ball and tap into the old wires for power. You can then coil the extra wire behind the dash and it will look great.

New and old version install pdf are attached if you need to reverse engineer the thing.
