Yep, had three BMWs in the fleet done last Autumn. Call your dealer with your VIN to confirm, and it make take a while to get an appointment since they can't keep the parts in stock.

I just got my recall letter yesterday too, for my 2001 530i. I've never been to the dealer in the year I've had the car, but I need to order an extra key so I might as well do both at once. Being as this is my first BMW, I've never been to a BMW dealer (or any luxury car dealer, in fact) so it will be an interesting experience.

I just went this morning to have mine done as I got the letter as well - it turns out they didn't need to replace mine. Evidently, my airbag was manufactured by "AutoLiv" which they previously thought was only in 97-00 E39's. I have an '01 540i and apparently the shop sent an update to BMW USA to notify them that the cutoff must actually have been 2001 (or maybe mid-year).

When I called the dealer they had to order the part, which took a month or so, just so you know.

On recall #17V-047
I too, just got the letter from BMW stating that the parts are now in stock. I called the dealer today, gave them the last 7 vin#'s. She said they had to order the part & when it came in, they'd give me a call to make appointment.

I had my E46 ('05) drivers side done in Nov. 2016, new steering wheel center now. The passenger side was done about a year earlier.

On Recall # 16V-071
I now have (3) E83 X3's that are on another driver's side airbag recall, which I got the initial notification letter back on 4-01-16. Still waiting on those parts to become available.

UPDATE 03-23-17......Just got call from the dealer, airbag came in & have appointment on next Tuesday. We'll see if it's replaced or what.

I got the airbag recall letter in Feb. 2016 for my 2012 e93. Over the past year I made 3 or 4 calls to the dealer, and was told that the part isn't available yet. Earlier this month I called BMW USA customer service to express my disappointment in a pleasant way. Remarkably, the dealer was able to get the part a week later, and the repair/replacement was completed in a few hours. I was given a loaner car as well even though my car is out of warranty.

I got mine a while back, local dealer called me last week to let me know my replacement air bag arrived. Taking it in later this week for the replacement. I do all my own work, so can't wait to see what other repairs they recommend that have already been done.

In addition to the air bag replacement, my dealer did a free "multi-point inspection", and didn't try to sell me anything. Either I was lucky, or it is a reputable dealer.

I made an appointment with the dealer this coming Sat, they have part in stock and I was told it is relative short service, take about an hour or so. I might also check out the price of a new master key when I am there.

Had mine replaced this morning also. Only took 30-45 minutes and no pitch to buy anything else (other than a new car from a salesman while I was perusing the lot).

UPdate....Took my '01 540i sport in to the dealer today for the recall. They inspected & said it was OK, so did NOT replace mine. All is well. I guess I have a "good" one, whatever that means with all the bad air bag information being reported.

Interesting you say that. My letter indicated that the dealer would inspect the inflator and if the Takata inflator was found it would be replaced. I went into it thinking that maybe the airbag wouldn't be replaced but it was. I can't believe that with all the negative press associated with this that any suspect airbag isn't replaced. Just think of the liability your dealer accepted by not replacing the airbag. Hopefully you will never need the airbag but if you do I would want an updated part in place.

What I was told by the dealer is that my airbag was not Takata, it's AutoLiv. I also have 2001 540i sport. As I posted above, dealer was confused when I bought mine in as it was not Takata, which previously they believed were in 2001 e39's. They thought AutoLiv airbag installation was only through '00 but evidently it extended into '01.

This is what I was told, at least. I was there several hours while they checked and spoke to BMW USA. it's obviously a little bit scary - it's worth keeping tabs on this issue as others take their vehicles in and re-confirming we don't have the problematic airbags.

This sounds similar to my experience.
2001 540i/6sp
I saw the recall on BMW website so I went in before I received the letter. The dealer said it'd take about 2 hours.
After waiting 2 hours, they said there's some confusion on the combination of my VIN and options and were still trying to figure it out. They took the airbag out and got the serial number. Then they called BMW and said that my car wasn't actually included in the recall. They put it back together with no parts changed and sent me on my way.

A week later, I got the recall letter in the mail and was confused now. I called the 800 number in the letter and talked to a BMW rep. She said the recall was closed out as completed. I told her the service rep said they didn't change anything because it wasn't part of the recall. She said that the dealer is not supposed to close the recall for my car unless the parts are replaced and that I should call the dealer back and get it straightened out.

I called the dealer and left 2 messages for the service advisor, who has not yet called me back after 1.5 weeks.

I'm going back to the dealer soon and see what they say.
