Jim Conforti said my 318ti w/his chip should hit 140...it saw 130 and probably would have gone a bit more...downhill maybe 135+

Vmax for a stock E36 318is coupe or sedan unfettered with a speed limiter is 213 km/h (132 mph) on level ground, that is, as the car slooooowly reaches the rev limiter.

I know they vary from year to year but have you checked your owners manual. It actually states it on there....my 325i was limited to 128 as stated in manual (if I remember) pre-chip. Now its unlimited...fastest I've dared to get it to was 138mph.

the problem with my 318i is that once it reaches 135km, the car starts hesitating for some reason, someone might know why it does this???????

What is the rpm when that happens? Does it hesitate at 135 km/h in both fourth and fifth gear?

The 318ti is geared pretty high. At 110 MPH the motor was turning at about 5200 RPM's. My 330i at the same speed only has the motor turning at 3,400 RPM's.

its not really hesitating, but kinda sruggles at that point, and the car is manual at 4,000rpm, at in 5th gear.

Before I ask an engine guru, what engine does it have: M42? M44? Four different engines went into the 318i depending on when it was produced and for what market.

Internally, BMW also refers to your car as a 318is because of its 4-valve, sports engine, so that you would have "318is Limousine". The German use of "limousine" just means a 4-door, sedan.

Anyway, I will see what I can find out.

If you ask a North American marketing type, you have a 318i as they decided to only slap an 's' on to their cars with two doors, including those (such as the 328i coupe) without sports engines. If you ask a Munich engineer, you have a 318is sedan (because of its engine) to distinguish it from the European 318i which is the same car with a lower output, eight-valve, non-sports engine.

We had two version of the 318i here, one before 1996, and one after 1996.

318i - available in saloon and cabriolet
Engine:1796cc,in-line 4,8 valves
Max power output:115hp/5500rpm
Max torque:124ib ft/3900rpm
Top speed:201km/h(200)-saloon 194km/h(189)-cabriolet
0-100km/h:11.3s(12.3)-saloon 12.5s(13.7)-cabriolet

318is - available in coupe and saloon
Engine:1796cc,in-line4,16 valves
Max power output:140hp/6000rpm
Max torque:129ib ft/4200rpm
Top speed:213km/h(207)
0-100km/h:10.2s(11.6)

has anybody driven the two types of 318i's???? the regular 318i specs are so much like a honda civic

Yes, I have. The first would be very similar to my old 1993 M40 318i; the second to my current M44 318is. I didn't realize that Canada ever received anything with the M40/M43 engines; I thought you guys largely got U.S. market cars with a Canadian options package.

I think they drive the car in the wrong gear. I find an "underpowered" 318is with a manual transmission is just fine up to 190 km/h, and like most here who drive BMWs, I don't exactly dawdle.

I might wish for a larger engine if I drove faster or towed a trailer.

The guys need more information as there are a number of things that might cause the car to hesistate around 4000 rpm.

For a start:
  • How old is the car and how many miles does it have?
  • What maintainance has been done on the engine?
  • Does the car hesistate around 4000 rpm in every gear, in particular gears or just fifth gear?

*The car was manufactured 06/96 and has 240,000km
*Goes for service when the lights go out, and gets serviced only at BMW
*No just 5th gear on the highway

Could this be a wear and tear thing??????????
