Oil change interval

Hi everyone! Quick question about oil changes:

Our 04 530i has been doing great, with no problems, now at 12,500 miles.
We had the first oil change done voluntarily around 4,000 miles. The oil indicator said to do the "first" change at 11,000 miles, which we did. Now the service indicator says the next one is due at 14,000! All oil changes were done at the same BMW dealership, and I'm pretty sure they used synthetic. So my question: how come the second interval is so small?
I did a search and understand that city driving (with decreased mpg) will reduce the interval. We did mostly in-town driving for the first few months; the last several months have been doing more highway mileage (maybe 50/50 by now). Average gas mileage for past 4000 miles is 20.1 mpg (which is improved from 18 mpg for the first few months). Thoughts? I just figured with synthetic oil it could go 7500+ miles before another oil change (unless it wasn't synthetic? hope so -- it was $90!) Thanks, Kash

Oil Change

I have a 2005 545I which I purchased in November 2004. At 1500 miles I had the oil changed at my local dealership for $95.00 and I will change the oil again at 8000 miles. I understand BMW states you can run the vehicle to approx. 15,000 miles between services however for peace of mind I am going to change my oil every 7,000 miles. I don't consider $95.00 too much to pay knowing my wife doesn't have to wory about any issues with her vehicle. I consider $60,000 plus for a vehicle as a investment which requires care and not to be looked at as a "throw away" vehicle. If this vehicle is a lease however by all means service it at 15,000 and drive it like you stole it !!

If you changed the oil at 11,000 miles, the car should not be asking for another at 14,000 miles. Indeed, you do not need another oil change this soon. Either something wasn't reset at 11,000, or there is a fault in the system. The dealership should be able to get your service indicator back in synch. for you. My car asked for Service I at 750 miles . . . . faults can happen.

You sure it said it needed it again at 14k? You sure it isn't saying that you'll need it in 14k miles from now?

our mistake

I am kashrahman's wife. I took the car to the dealership to get an oil change. They told me that it is showing how many miles ARE LEFT until the next oil change is due. The number decreases slowly. So situation has been resolved. Thanks.

Any good BMW independent shop recommends about 7500-8000 miles for oil changes. Why risk harming the engine over a $100 oil change? It's preventative maintenance and I want my car to last and run well. 15K is there so BMW can save money with their scheduled maintenance program. If you're that cheap, return the BMW for a Honda or Toyota.

Agree with Ramsey. Common sense. I change oil every 5,000 miles. Mobil 1. My car is being pushed a little harder due to the tuning, otherwise I would aim for 7,500.

Wow, resurrecting a 7 year old oil thread, solely to spout off a personal over-maintaining opinion. Must be some kind of forum record.

Be fair. It's not quite seven years old.

As Bluebee says, it's Extra Virgin, every 3000 miles!
