hmmm this was kinda upsetting

my wife has a 01 X5 4.4i it runs pretty good but we got a X3 3.0 for a rental and it would kick the **** out of the X5. from a stop or roll on the highway the X3 pulled away with ease.

You mean little brother beats the KING of X?
Sure you got an 4,4 and its not just the decals?
Open the hood to be sure.
If its an 4,4 its for sure time for an engine test...

Well the X5 does weigh an extra 700 pounds compared to the X3...

Ooops didn't realize it was a 4.4i vs a 3.0i. You have some trouble, my friend. Had your 4.4i been healthy, there would not be question as to who's faster in the city or on the highway.

ITs 4.4i I. sure but to me it feels like it has no balls. maybe its that im used to a 450+ hp truck and 600+hp cobra. but the shifts on the X5 are slow and time consuming and teh X3 are quick and crisp. I know my X sports some 15.5 !/4 mile times. that equates to some 7.1 sec to 60mph.

You've got probs w/ your 4.4... get it checked. X5 0-60 should be 6.8-7.2... X3 3.0 w/ Auto 0-60 is 7.6-7.9 (the latter is the BMW number... prior is mags number) There is NO WAY your x5 should be beaten by the X3... get it checked out!

nah i dont think so. i am very competent in my mechanical ability's and as hard as it may be for us x5 owners to swallow, its the truth. the x3 is more nimble and quicker than big brother x5. but the x3 can t pull a fat lady out of a donut shop.

Actually, I'm not too surprised by it. I've driven a 4.4i several times. I like to test all the cars when the Susan G. Koman fund raiser drive comes by each year. It lets me take the cars on an extended test drive, with no salesman. The 4.4i has its extra nuts in the upper rpm band. A nice healthy pull. But the only place you'd really experience it is if you're passing on the freeway (Going 60 and suddenly want to go 90), or if you're doing a 0-60 test and can use the entire rpm range.. for two gears.

In city metro driving the 4.4i doesn't feel any more powerful than my 3.0i X5. In fact, my 3.0i feels a little faster off the line. 400 pounds lighter, and 4.10 differentials. Coming up the long hill to my house, in "Drive", the 4.4i feels no more powerful. But.. drop it into 3rd and floor it, and that's where you really notice the greater pull of the 4.4i.

I've also tested the X3 3.0i. I was surprised at how it did not perform much better than my 3.0i X5. It's only barely feels a little faster. Considering how much lighter it is, this was a shocker. Maybe a bad choice of differential and or tranny gearing on BMW's part. ?? They're both identical engines.

On the rough shifting thing, you might want to have your AT learning databases reset. My wife and I share driving the X. I can always tell when she's had the car for a long while. Its adapted to her style of driving. Your other option is to take the X out and drive it hard for 2 hours. The tranny will come back 'round to your way of shifting.

With one driver, and that driver occassionally performance driving.. the X5's shifting is crisp and instantaneous. Downshifts too.

My .02

Several factors... the X3 may have been manual, and with the extra weight the X5 hold, the manual on the lighter X3 makes all the difference. Top end, the 4.4 should out run the 3.0, but the 3.0 on one of bmw's best current engines.

Can't wait for the 4.4 to be an option in the X3.

Yeah, and have it snowplow through turns like a FWD car due to that added weight up front

The 4.4 could be made made much lighter - kinda like the new 3.0 in the 3 series.

Did you also notice the increased interior space of the X3 over the X5?

Seriously, I think these two models serve two different types of owners with different needs. I had an X5 4.4 as a loaner while my M Coupe was in for scheduled maintenance. I took it down some pretty rugged forest trails and it performed much better than I would have imagined. That 4.4 is pretty sweet but I wasn't too worried about 0-60 times.
