BMW Trademarks Terms iX1 Through iX9

BMW has reportedly secured trademarks for i variants to match its entire SUV line-up and then some – the terms in question being iX1, iX2, iX3, iX4, iX5, iX6, iX7, iX8, and iX9 – suggesting that a big push toward SUV electrification is about to get underway.

This would put any new EVs in the segment in line with the existing i sub-brand that already includes the i3 and i8.

BMW has announced its intention to electrify several SUVs in its existing line-up, including the recently announced fully electric X3 that’s due in 2020, and the X7 iPerformance concept plug-in hybrid three-row SUV revealed at the Frankfurt auto show (where the i Vision Dynamics concept, which looks an awful lot like a shot across the nose of the Tesla Model S, was also unveiled).

On the other hand, this could be much ado about nothing. BMW reportedly has a habit of registering trademarks and never getting around to using them – the company registered nearly 20 variants on a theme before settling on i for its EVs.

Time will tell.

Well that's interesting. I'm excited to see what BMW has in store for their electric lineup.

Personally, I haven't seen anything touch what Tesla has been doing, but I feel that BMW is a company who will in the future.
