The BMW i3 is Allegedly a Death Trap for Short Women

by Bimmerfest.com Member - Michael Accardi on November 21, 2017, 3:45 pm
According to a recent report, the BMW i3 fails to meet frontal impact performance standards when driven by 5-foot-tall women weighing less than 110 pounds, who don't wear seatbelts.

According to InsideEVs, BMW is on the verge of recalling 30,542 cars in the US, spanning model years 2014 to 2018. The issue came to light thanks to inconsistent results in recent National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) crash tests.

More specifically, in the unbelted small adult rigid barrier test, a 5th percentile female driver would sustain crash loads marginally above the limit.

In addition to the recall, BMW has issued a stop-sale order in the United States and is advising all occupants to use their seatbelts.

The key issue seems to be "who don't wear seatbelts". In this day and age, it is nuts to drive without seatbelts fastened. My car chimes and keeps doing so, if I have not fastened the seatbelt. I think it does quit after a time, but I always fasten the seatbelt. Not only that, but a person can be fined for not wearing the seatbelt. A person would have to really make a conscious decision to not fasten up, put up with the warnings and potential fines, just to not wear the seatbelt!

I'm sorry, if you don't wear a seatbelt, you are stupid.

And we all know, you can't fix stupid.

When oh when are people going to be responsible for their own actions.

Even worse, I read a report yesterday that my e46 is a death trap when the driver drives while sticking his head out of the sunroof.

Wonder what they are going to do as part of the recall? Put on a sticker on the dash that says put on your seatbelt maybe?

Anyone who drives a bimmer knows it's one hell of a feat to drive a BMW without a seatbelt fastened....that chime is the most annoying sound I can think of. Not only that, but isn't it illegal in all 50 states NOT to have your seatbelt fastened?

Indigology...there is one state, New Hampshire, where seat belt use is not mandatory, for adults over 18. Also, car insurance is not required. Kind of gives a new meaning to "Live Free or Die"!
