BMW ActiveHybrid 5 Series Pricing Released - $61845

From the North American International Auto Show in Detroit BMW announced the retail pricing of the new 2012 BMW ActiveHybrid 5. The M.S.R.P. will be $61,845 (including the $895 Destination and Handling charge).

Based on the BMW 535i Sedan, the ActiveHybrid 5 brings together BMW's 3.0-liter TwinPower Turbo inline 6-cylinder engine, an electric drive system and an 8-speed automatic transmission for the first time for a combined output of 335hp. The latest generation of BMW ActiveHybrid technology also adds precisely controlled energy management to the mix. All of which gives the BMW ActiveHybrid 5 an exceptional balance of performance and fuel economy for a benchmark performance/luxury sedan.

The BMW ActiveHybrid 5 can operate in all-electric mode up to a speed of 37 mph (60 km/h), for zero emissions in town. The lithium-ion high-voltage battery can store sufficient energy to give an all-electric driving range of up to approximately 2.5 miles (4 km) at an average speed of 22 mph (35 km/h). Conversely, the powertrain system can combine the engine and electric motor torque to accelerate the BMW ActiveHybrid 5 from 0 to 60 mph in 5.7 seconds.

The 2012 BMW ActiveHybrid 5 is scheduled to arrive in US BMW Centers in late Spring 2012. Read the complete press release on the BMW ActiveHybrid 5 series for all the details

It's going to end up a flop just like any BMW hybrid. It is too overpriced. The Lexus GSh and Infiniti M35h will step all over this.

Mark my words BMW. You'll sell more diesels than this.

i really liked my testdrive in the hybrid x6 last year. i think i might have bought this hybrid instead of a 550 if it were available sooner (and had awd). i agree a diesel would be nice in the us, but for city driving stop and go, it's hard to beat the quiet smooth efficiency of hybrid imo.

If you liked the X6 hybrid with its antiquated hybrid power train, you'll love the new car.

i don't know why folks gave the x6 hybrid such a bad review. i though it drive MUCH smoother than the 5.0 or m variants, with the same immediacy as the m (though without the m sound). the electric motors removed any hint of the turbo lag, providing ultra smooth takeoffs. all you 535 drivers who complain of hesitation or lag from a start should go check out the hybrid 5 when it arrives.

i might be driving around a hybrid x6 right now if they had ever built one with a normal backseat. the 2011 x6 hybrid was 2+2 seating, while the 2012 has a normal backseat but no hybrid. i have a premonition of a future x5 hybrid arriving to replace our lexus 450h.

C&D Expects it to be priced similarly to the GS. And more than the M35h.

However, keep in mind that this contains options such as Nav, black panel display, etc., that are not included on a base 535. I reserve judgement until I see the complete specs and drive it, but I think that it is competitive.

Would there be an Xdrive version of the ActiveHybrid 5?

I think BMW is a bit schizophrenic about the hybrid marketing.

The X6 hybrid didn't have better mileage numbers than the non-hybrid, so my sales guy promoted it as a "performance hybrid". Except they only delivered it in that eco-blue color. That's not a performance hybrid, that's an eco-hybrid that just isn't very eco. It didn't come in any 'performance colors'. I think it would have sold better if it was sold as an X6M-hybrid with the associated color options. I was already more expensive than the X6M.

With the AH5, I think they are trying to actually deliver an eco-hybrid. This will only work if it has better city mileage than the non-hybrid cars. If they can pull that off, they might have something.. then they just need to put that powerplant in the X5 and they'll have a real contender for the 450h (which seems like the official eco family city car of NorCal).

Isnt BMW trying to borrow hybrid tech from Toyota?

I do not know.
But I will be really pissed off when they put all the battries for the drivetrain in the sparewheel well. And the normal car battery in one of the sides like in former five series.
