Nobody in the USA can credibly comment on this, however, I think if I drove both I would reach the same conclusion as my countryman here.

Has anyone asked why Mercedes, Audi and VW can have diesels in the U.S. but BMW cannot seem to find a way
to bring the M 550d drive to the U.S.?

An M550d would be too expensive.

A 540d would be another story.

The M550d would cost as much as an M5 to sell here, and that might not be at a profit either. It's never sell at that number...can you imagine pulling up to the country club in your brand new $100k diesel?

There are strong rumors the 535D will be here within a year.

Agree M550D makes no sense in the US.

Why do you think an M550d would cost as much as an M5? BMW hasn't priced the M550d that high in Germany.
