The love it or hate it Gran Turismos styled F34 5 door hatch back version of 3 series F34 has gone into production. This spy photo shows a production chassis rolling down BMW's factory line. We've seen spy shots of pre-production test mules running around for a few years now. BMW seems to have delayed bringing the car to market, which led to speculate that BMW had axed the 3 GT program. With this chassis spied on the assembly line it looks like the 3 Series GT is back on.
The F34 3 Series GT is the baby sibling to the F07 5 Series Gran Turismos that launched before the F10 5 Series but shares many design attributes of the 5 series sedan. the 5 GT has been a sales flop in the US but a huge success overseas. Weak US sales caused BMW to adjusted their strategy with the 3 series GT and push back the release.
Unlike the bigger 5 series GT the 3 GT has a pointy rear window making it the only F3x 3 series without a Hofmeister kink. We've also spied the 3 GT with a pop up rear spoiler, another first for the 3 series line. What other first the 3 series GT will have be revealed at the 2012 Paris Auto show at the end of September, we will have full coverage of the show, including the F34 3 Series GT.
With poor US sales of the 5 series GT and F33 wagon coming to the US it isn't likely the F34 will make it state side. I for one am not disappointed as I think BMW's GT designs are hideous. Is anyone disappointed that the 3 Series GT will not be coming to the US or do you think it is as ugly as I do?
