Infiniti Q50 takes electronic power steering to a new level - Drive by wire
Infiniti Motor Company is taking drive-by-wire way too seriously in their new Q50. The Q50 is Infiniti's newest luxury model aimed at BMW, Audi and Mercedes-Benz. It's lined with leather and packed with technology.
The big story with the Q50 is in the tech department. Sure we have electronic throttle control and electronic gear box control, even electronic brakes, but Infiniti has taken the term drive-by-wire literally. They are debuting the world's first steering-by-wire set up, called Direct Adaptive Steering. Due to the lack of rubber bushing and hydraulics, the system is able to produce quicker response times. Driver adjustable ratio and effort levels permit up to 32 different settings. Two ECUs are used, one to read the steering wheel angle, which moves a steering angle actuator; the second returns force feedback to the driver via steering wheel. It's like a video game, but with a real car attached.
What kind of feel will this system offer the driver? Well, if you look at BMW's EPS, it still utilizes a physical connection to the steering. Still, EPS takes a lot of heat because people just don't like the way it feels. How will Infiniti's steering-by-wire compare being completely disconnected? I'm not sure if the video game feel would cut it.
