BMW 2 Series Top Safety Pick

It is hard to believe what tests new cars go through for determining safety ratings. That is why it is great that IIHS puts photos and videos of the test online for you to view and see just how the cars react. The video below is called the "2014 BMW 2 series small overlap test".

The good news is that they have rated the 2014 BMW 2 Series as a Top Safety pick scoring "Good" in all categories. You can view all the photos and more of the videos at the IIHS web site at http://www.iihs.org/iihs/ratings/vehicle/v/bmw/2-series

I'm glad the 2er scored well, but I think that test is too extreme and odds of experiencing such a extreme small overlap crash are minuscule. I find it ridiculous that in that most extreme test they make no allowance for compression of the other vehicle's structure as they do in their other tests.

The overlap test is a very important test of a vehicle's safety. If you don't believe that, you should visit the acres of wrecked car in my area all there due to accidents. These vehicles are segregated from the usual junk yard cars for legal reason like pending law suits or waiting for insurance settlements.

Anyway, very few serious accidents with other vehicles are due to straight on frontal crashes. BTW, they do consider the compression of the other vehicle structure simply by controlling the speed of the crash.

Lower insurance cost and safer for drivers is great but dealers will brag about this and consumers won't get much off the MRSP.

Sometimes the impact is with a stationary object, like a tree.

Will my insurance company revise my rates based on this report?
