With the launch of the G11 next generation 7 Series coming soon BMW has been out testing prototypes again. In previous pictures the body was heavily camouflaged with the swirly paint and fake body panels. This prototype appears to be running production, or near production body work. One of the key improvements over the Fxx BMW models is the hood line. Most likely by utilizing high tech materials BMW was able to move the hood line forward eliminating the ugly straight cut hood.
The sizing falls in line with the current F01 7 series, and styling is expected to be inline with the current 3 and 5 series. The clear outline of a typical kidney grill crushes the hopes that the new 7 would have styling from the Concept BMW Vision Future Luxury. While totally unrealistic, the idea of coach doors (suicide) for the rear was enticing.
With styling being a mixed bag with nothing out of the ordinary the big changes will come in the way of construction, weight savings and technology. The 7 series ushers in a new platform technology that will underpin the 7 and 5 as well as other future models. Code named 35up the modular platform will be made with a mix of high strength steel, aluminum and carbon fiber. The 35up gives BMW a shared architecture and dramatic weight savings. Rumors are that the new G11 will weigh less then the current F10 5 series.
