Hands on with the G30 at Detroit - What do you want to know?

g30 5 series detroit auto show

I'll be hands on with the G30 5 Series at the Detroit Auto Show next Monday (Jan 9th). This will be my first chance to get hands on with the new 5 and I cannot wait. I'll be reviewing the visuals and build quality now and the driving dynamics later in the month.

If there is anything you would like me to specifically check, look at, take photos of, etc. let me know. I will also hopefully have access to BMW engineers so I can ask specific questions about features, suspension, etc. Post your questions below and I'll do my best to get them answered.

Tim

On the 540 xDrive M Sport please ask if 223 Dynamic Damper Control comes with the 704 M Sport Suspension. Also please if you want the best Sport Suspension, what is it?

I want to know if and when in the UK I can order a 550d or 550i (or whatever the top model is) in xdrive m Sport touring spec. And if these will be offered with a performance upgrade pack (body styling) from the factory.

A pic of the trunk without the space saver - already seen it with the tire.

Thanks, Tim. Can you ask them about suspension options on the M550i? Reading some of the documentation posted here the Adaptive M suspension seems to be an option. I am wondering what is standard on that model. Any impressions on how the car handles would be appreciated. I assume they will show the 540, but if you can get your hands on a M550i even better.

Sounds like suspension combinations and information is the ambiguous piece of the puzzle for most.

Other points that need clarity.

Will US cars get anti-dazle head lights (I suspect not but it would be nice to confirm)
Any information on the date for M550i and if the M550i will have a larger fuel tank.

Thanks for asking Tim. Poke around for info on if they plan to bring the Diesel G30 to the USA. Will we see a 2018 540dX?

Thank you for offering.

On the 540i M sport, suspension set up, according to price guide we have 3 options:
1-DHP
2-704 M Sport
3-223 DDC

we are not 100% clear if we can have 2 and 3 together, or which is the best (sportier?) setup.

tks

It shows currently supported G30's and G31's by dealership software.

EDIT: I have seen the following:
  • EU: 520d, 520d xDrive, 530d, 530d xDrive, 530i, 530i xDrive, 540i, 540i xDrive, M550i xDrive
  • US: 530i, 530i xDrive, 540d xDrive, 540i, 540i xDrive, M550i xDrive
So, yes, I assume that shows initial launch models.

Superb. I thought they were saying the 540i was xdrive only. Or is EU and UK different?

540i can be xdrive or not. M550 I have only seen as xdrive.

EU and UK is the same.

Not according to the press:

First up, a disclaimer. The 540i tested here wasn't exactly representative of the model we’ll see in the UK. Running traditional rear-wheel drive, it lacked the xDrive that will be standard on the 540i in the UK.

http://www.autocar.co.uk/car-review/...mw-540i-review

Sorry I use this as an acid test as to what the list pertains to, EU or is the UK different, which it usually is.

Disclaimer: I have no inside information.

ISTA+ shows the G31, much like the F11, only available in non-North American markets and only the 540iX (not 540i) in either LHD or RHD. The G30 is showing 540i and 540iX in both LHD or RHD. It does not specify UK for EU; similarly, when I check VIN's, the decoders show same delineation (ie USA vs EUR and LL or RL steering). The only other hardware difference I am aware is for those in Asian markets with support for special characters.

Thanks for offering - I don't get a look any earlier than my dealer gets one delivered or at the Philadelphia Auto show after January 28th. Ok, so we used to think of BMWs as "driver's cars" but one of my annoyances is the tight leg room for rear seat passengers - especially since my wife and I are tall and drive/ride with our front seats pushed back quite a bit.

Sort of annoying when people say things like "Gee, kinda small! You paid how much!!"

I found show promoters tend to adjust seats for maximum effect ... but if you could get a feel for whether or not BMW managed to carve out some additional back seat passenger leg room that'd be great.

BMW info says about 1.5" added to rear knee room.

I hope that doesn't mean that the front seats go 1.5" further forward.
The leg room is already tight in the driver's seat.

I find driver's seat comfortable, but I am only 6'2". Rear room can be a bit tight, especially with 456 Comfort Seats.

I have standard seats. When the seat height is raised the seat moves forward limiting driver leg room. If I buy the G30, it must have comfort seats.

As it rises and moves forward, can't you just use the for/aft adjustment to move it back? I have comfort seats. I'm not sure how the G30 gains rear seat legroom. Has the wheelbase changed from the F10?

No, the seat is at the aft most point. When the seat moves up, the fore-aft track moves forward up a ramp.

Tim, while not a question about the G30, any idea when the i cars will get traffic jam assist? Seems like a major miss for the US market when it's available in other markets.

Length has increased 1.2" and wheelbase .2".

So it looks like they put the increased length into the back seat.

I have separate controls to raise and lower seat vs move forward in back. I sit all the way down with straight vertical back. In addition to other adjustments, this gives me the most comfortable and ergonomic position along with best visibility.

My controls are separate as well. Put your seat all the way back and all the way down. Then raise the seat height and the seat will move forward. Try it.

Correct, it is not completely vertical; there is some horizontal movement. If I raise seat, my line of sight is above rearview mirror at the visors; plus, elevation puts uncomfortable upward force at hamstrings on downward legs.

Hard to see how they get 1.5" in the rear seat out of a .2" increase in wheelbase. In the F10, the rear seats are already sitting close to the rear wheels, but if they say they have, that must be the case. They also say they have trimmed the front overhang so that must mean increased rear overhang if the overall length is longer and the wheelbase is only increased by.2"

Could also be thinner front seats. The multi-contour seats on F10 take quite a bit of space.

I wish but with AWD I doubt they will offer LSD. The 540i with LSD would be sweet too. I was waiting for an LSD option for the F06 but I've given up on it. I don't think BMW will offer one above the 4 series. You can always go aftermarket if you want one for the RWD BMWs. It's really a shame that they stopped offering it on the non-M cars.
