E12 Summary

What is an E12?

The BMW E12 was the first 5 Series automobile made and the benchmark for future 5 Series Models. The first model in the United States was the BMW 530I sold in 1975 through 1978 and later the 528I in 1979. The 5 denotes BMW’s fifth new platform (mid-size class sedan) and the last two digits the engine size. The BMW 528I was an upscale model fitted with power windows, wood trim, and air conditioning. And, the leather interior and sunroof, optional equipment. The 5-speed manual transmission replaced the previous 4-speed in 1980.
