Roof Slow going up
I read several of the Roof posts and watched a few Youtube videos... I like some advice and have some questions that I did not find.
I put my roof down and up about a week ago and I "thought" it was a little slow going up. Today I put it down without a problem. When I put it up I could hear the motor straining and the roof was going up slow. It stopped halfway up. I was able to put it down and it went back up real slow with a slowing/straining sound on the motor.
Any trouble shooting advice would be appropriated
It is a 2007. I have never had a problem with the roof-- so this in new territory.
I have never lubricated any part of the roof
I have not seen any fluid leaks that suggest hydraulic fluid
Any chance it could be just need lube on the joints?
I do not think I am up for taking my roof off alone
Problem declared itself...
I figured I'd cycle the roof and lube what I could see...
The roof unlatched and nothing. No motor sound or strain.
Any advice would still be appreciated.
Worst case scenario-- any idea what a Mechanic would charge? I have a good one in town that does a lot of BMW work.
Classic symptoms of a dead hydraulic pump motor. If you've been looking at the various posts, then you know the E85 top motor saga. Unfortunately you now know it first hand. :(
Yes, I'm afraid you witnessed the last gasps of the top motor as it strained to open the top. May still be savable if fished out before too long.

Other than the motor/pump, what other parts should I buy/replace?
Does anyone have a recommended Site for the roof motor?
I am concerned that my 12 years old cloth top might not be up for it... It still looks good, no tears.
Gary, if you plan to diy I would recommend waiting to buy anything until you get the old motor out. Depending on the condition of the motor, you may not need to buy anything if you are able to resuscitate it. Some people have had success soaking the motor in diesel overnight to free it, others have used WD40 and a good whack with a mallet to get it running again. The oem motor is pretty resilient, and you will not compromise the top in any way during the motor removal/replacement.
In addition to the motor I highly recommend you buy the hydraulic system repair kit. It has all the minor bits and pieces needed to take care of anything you drop, break, lose, etc. and new copper seals and banjo bolts for the hydraulic lines.
