X5 E70 CCC upgrade to 10.25" Android

This is my 1st post in this forum. I thought of contributing just in case it helps other owners who owns an X5 with the older headunit CCC or non navigation.

I own a 2007 x5 e70. The screen is a 6.5", no navigation, no bluetooth headunit. I have noticed that if the screen is a 6.5" it doesn't come with navigation feature (correct me if I'm wrong) this is just based on multiple car ads that I saw.

I was planning to retrofit the CIC headunit with an updated idrive knob. After doing some research, the cheapest set that I can get on eBay is around $1200 USD (8" screen) but others have spent up to $3000+.

I thought of buying an aftermarket radio ($450 USD) for e70 but I only found 1 review and it was terrible.

Then I saw the 10.25" screen for the E70. All of the ads that I saw based from different store requires 2011 and above. I have contacted one of them and they say it is because of the CIC requirement. I told one of the store that I will remove the screen so that I can take a photo and they can confirm if it will work or not.

I took a photo of the 2 cables and multiple sellers confirmed that it will work as long as I pick the CCC version. There was no ad for the CCC version when I first enquire. Below are the cables. The one of the left is the important cable (10-pin F-type cable) this is the cable that you will need to connect to the new screen.

I spent 4 hours installing the radio. Below is what it looks like now: Upgrading from a 6.5" with no navigation and no bluetooth to this 10.25" android radio was an awesome upgrade! The 10.25" totaly changes the interior.

I can still access the idrive info, rear camera works ok. I did unplugged the rear camera from the original source and plug it to socket of the new screen. The only issue is that the idrive knob doesn't work on the android but I can live with that for now considering what my previous setup was. I can just use touch screen. I was thinking of upgrading the knob, unfortunately it is not plug and play on the X5 unlike in other models. Also, the upgraded knob might work only for CIC model.

I am not affiliated with any store. I am just trying to share the information that I gather after few months of research in finding a cost/effective radio upgrade for my x5 e70.

I purchased this from eBay just search for the word Yokotron, it is one of the store that rebranded the screen. There's 2 version one for CCC (2007-2010) and CIC (2011-2013)

Main Features that I like:
1. 10.25" screen! It looks like the F15 radio and mimics the looks of the idrive 5.

2. Full Android - I was able to download and use 3 navigation apps. Google Maps, iGo and Waze. No need to worry about dealer navigation updates for those who own built-in nav.

Waze!

Google Maps

iGo
http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a9/...psz4wwgblz.jpg

3. Rear camera - works great with the factory camera or you can buy an OEM camera. The green line guide moves along with the steering.

4. DVR - dashcam (I will be purchasing a camera with built-in sd card slot for this - I will share once I have it installed)

I have also purchased this magnetic mount and micro keyboard. I will have this mounted beside the radio. The touchpad will be my replacement for the idrive knob when in Android mode. This is also nice for typing address when using a navigation app. It keeps your screen clean from fingerprints and for less than $15 both that is a steal :)

All the buttons on the steering wheel works ok.

The sound quality is still the same to the factory as the sound is driven by the original headunit. I have to plug the middle speaker to the cord of the new screen.

Total cost: $720 AUD including shipping.

I hope this helps others who have the old radio.

Excellent workmanship too!

rpoitras 07-08-2017 09:27 AM

How fast is it? I once replaced a factory radio in an Expedition I had with a Chinese navigation unit and it was absolutely horrible.

bi 07-08-2017 01:45 PM

@rpoitras - the performance is great, there is no lag. The screen response is really good just like a highend android phone. The video resolution is very clear. There's another popular company that sells this. It has a video review in youtube, I just don't want to mention the name in this forum as I didn't purchase from them.

I am planning to install a small trakpad in the steering to control the unit. I'll see how it goes,

Great upgrade for cars w no nav.

Nice work and looks good!! I read it that it displays coolant temp(it extracts from can bus) on the display as well which is quite useful for E70 diesels.
You can also use wifi obd dongle and install torque or carly app on it and it will display all the display parameters on the display like in the pics attached. It looks nice provided the quality is good and not like other cheap Chixx products.

mikeson 07-08-2017 05:43 PM

That is a great and do you mind if I ask web link which after market parts you bought?

bi 07-09-2017 12:57 AM

I believe this headunit is a nice upgrade even for those who have ccc navigation. There's no need to spend $3,000+ to retrofit a CIC NBT headunit!

I just found out that the steering buttons are working ok for videos and music. You can also mirror your iphone or android and control the actual phone using the screen. Though the headunit itself is a full android already so I don't think this is app is necessary.

Now, I have 3 navigation apps to choose from:

Waze!

Google Maps
http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a9/...psfofdwhrl.jpg

iGo
http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a9/...psz4wwgblz.jpg

There's also an app called dashboard and the information is exactly the same as the instrument cluster

Rear camera works perfectly

@mikeson - I'll send you a pm for the link.

1bad540 07-09-2017 07:12 AM

very nice. hows it sound?

smyles 07-09-2017 08:46 AM

How is it look behind the screen, is there a trim that covers the gap?

Overall looks pretty well, a bit 'aftermarket', but given the cost/benefit, a very solid option for CCC/non-navi cars. Given the openness of android and creativity of our Chinese friends, there's plenty of potential of future integrations for cheap. Bimmertech and the likes must be furious, though...

P.S. I don't see an issue with posting vendor names. I mean we all mention brands and vendors for bushings or windshields, so as long as it doesn't sound like a sales pitch...

AlphaBetaX5 07-09-2017 12:38 PM

Beautiful work!

I have a full option '08 X5, the display has nav. BT and rear camera. But your pictures are tempting me to do a research about this upgrade!

One drawback can be the dysfunctional knob though.

My complain about the oem display is that it is so laggy, and the map is no up to date. (It is not too old though).

How much overall did you spend on this project?

Another question, do you think you can upgrade the rear camera too? I mean replace it with an aftermarket camera with more resolution zoom and clarity?

This is awesome. Can you PM the link to where you got this item to me as well?

I'm guessing you can add a backup camera? If so this is exactly what I'm looking for!

bi 07-09-2017 07:47 PM

@hshakarami - the knob doesn't work but the micro-keyboard with touchpad will be the replacement of the knob. That's like having the latest idrive touch knob. I have the factory rear camera but when I upgraded the screen, it looks totally different from what it was. It is a lot clearer so I won't be replacing it anymore but you can if you want. Total expense was $720 AUD including shipping.

@jma - please see post on top for the store name in eBay. I am assuming when you say backup camera it is the front camera that acts like a dashcam? If that's your question, then it is a yes. I am about to purchase a front camera so that I can use the DVR functionality.

jzdavE70 07-10-2017 12:23 AM

Are you able to receive Text messages notifications? I saw I video on YouTube where the dial knob was working, is it because you have CCC and not a CIC system?

Can you take a photo from the passenger side to see the gap in the back? How's the boot time? Will it boot immediately to the traditional BMW menu or it has to wait for the Android to boot up?

I found this from ebay which is the same brand like the post: http://www.ebay.com/itm/YOKOTRON-10-...EAAOSwDrNZWFIh

There's a photo there showing the back of the screen, which I think make it "NBT Genuine" look.

http://www.cdnclouds.net/p/4ad4016f7...f_DSCN5749.JPG

The knob not working I think because this HU is originally designed for CIC knob so it decode the button differently. I saw from the link above there is setting about CAN type, which you may try to set to your car model. If it is not in the list, you may try to ask the store for the updated list.

Very nice work! Looks neat too. I have the 8.5" so I don't know how much of an upgrade this will be. How does the unit get internet connection? Tether through your phone?

5XTHEPROBLEMS 07-26-2017 05:22 AM

I have an 08 with nav and this still looks like a great option. I wanted to go for the full NBT setup-- but the price was just too prohibitive. The pictures on the OP don't show any longer, but I was wondering if the map/ nav can be used on a split screen like it would on idrive. Basically, is there a way to have Nav and your music display at the same time on the screen? Thanks!

Im curious about this as well, I usually navigate while i listen to a audio book and the iphone is very good because it pauses the audio and gives u directions then resumes with the audiobook.

the issue with this 500 dollar unit is that you could easily buy a ipad nano for half the price and have it do the same thing. you would just have to hook up a power and aux cable to the ipad

albeit a bit more ghetto. but i just don't like adding things to the car that when i sell it i would have to remove or get nothing for.

If this split screen works, this super upgrade:thumbup:

Hope someone replyes...

I have X5 2008 3,0sd, pro navi, L7...
