Battery Replacement
 
hey guys,

well, my battery started to die, if i stopped for about 5 mins listing to the radio with ignition off, i can't start the car anymore only if made a bridge with another car, but if i driving the car using radio, lights and everything, i can start the car normally,
i tried the test #9 , when the car is off without even keeping the high beam 5 mins to get rid off the over charge (or i don't know hat it's called), the reading is almost 110 - 121 as i know it must be nothing below 125 or something like that, and while the engine is running, it gives the reading of 141-143 , I've installed new alternator 4 months ago Krauf ALV1591BA 120 amp,so i know that there's no signs that it's a problem with the alternator since while i'm driving , the car successfully charges

following the table on this site, the standard battery for the car should have these values :
max : 77 Ah 780A 278x175x190 mm B13
min : 70 Ah 640 A 278x175x190 mm B13

and i found here ENERGIZER PREMIUM 77AH 780A which gives the reading of the maximum recommended by http://whatbattery.co.uk/,since to get a Bosch S5 or Varta will take long time to arrive which i'm not willing to wait, walking or taking a bus in -4F not a nice thing to do :bigpimp:

my question is, Is it ok to install a battery with the maximum recommended or better to buy something in the rage between the max & min?

I just bought my 4th battery after 21 years for $100 and possible only $50 if my rebate goes through. It was a H8AGM from Pep Boys with 900CCA/95AH

The more CCA the longer the battery will last.
My original BMW battery lasted 8 years, I'm now on my 2nd battery, a NAPA Legend. 11 years and still working OK.

As Jim said, the bigger the better. Notice my new battery is rated 900CCA? Since you also live in a cold climate the higher the CCA the better. Engines need that extra boost when it's cold outside to move those pistons against the thicker oil viscosity.

I'm a little confused about the numbers you posted. What does "the reading is almost 110 - 121 as i know it must be nothing below 125 or something like that, and while the engine is running, it gives the reading of 141-143" mean?

A fully charged battery, at rest, should show 12.6-12.7 volts. When the car is running you should be reading somewhere between 13.7 and 14.1 volts. Both of these should be measured directly at the battery. If "110 - 121" really means 11.0 - 12.1 volts then you have an issue.

Post real voltages, measured at the battery, with the car at rest (wait until the light in the trunk goes out) and with the car running. You really don't know if your alternator is good or not.

well, on the test #9 it doesn't show dots for the fractions, so 110-121 means 11.0v, 12.1 v
and when the engine running , 14.1 volts

i can remove the alternator problem because it's new , plus when the car is running normally then i stop and switch off all the lights, i can start the car again normally, but if i kept a light on or the radio for 5 mins, i can't start the car, that's how i knew that the battery is dead, plus with me it's already 2 years old and i don't know when did the previous owner changed it last time

Based on those numbers your battery is toast. Replace it.

Also keep an eye on your alternator. I've replace several "new" alternators that just weren't working correctly.

Buy yourself a digital multimeter and learn to measure the voltage at the battery. Much more reliable than the on-board display.

thanks, i changed the battery and now everything is working fine,
will get myself a multimeter measure them

i always go with the biggest battery i can physically fit in the car

the bigger the better,

my interstate Megatron that im on now, is over ten years old

(*the end is near) i had not ran it for a week last week and i had i jump it.. First time having to jump the 540 in about ten years,

caught me off guard.. Im ready to replace it,

So, which battery did you end up buying.

Is it an AGM battery ?

Get yourself a battery charger / maintainer if you do not already have one, and hook it up regularly -I do it weekly- to keep your new battery fully charged.

wanted to buy bosch S5 but couldn't find it anywhere , looks like Russians don't like German things :rofl: :rofl: :rofl:

but the ENERGIZER people are saying it's reliable and it has the same readings and size so i guess everything is gonna be fine, since i found that the old battery was 60 Ah 540A, which is fa from the minimum recommended )))
