Yeah, estimates are always crazy like that. Your insurance will probably want to total the car if you file a claim, since they consider it to be an ancient 318.

PS: I'm sad that the OG OT thread has been permanently shut down, but at least we get our posts back. Plus, now it is a sticky.

 I was really missing those 6500 posts. I finally cleared 20k and they took it away from me. :lmao: Nice to see the thread live on in infamy.

It's his insurance that the claim is with. Plus NADA still says like $5700 or something so doubt they will total. If they do, O' well I will fix it still. One his insurance company approves it, I am most likely going to just pay the difference and get the whole car painted so will be like new.

TechieTechie 02-27-2014 07:45 AM

We have a nicely named thread, we are stickied, our old thread is still visible and our post counts have been restored :roundel:. Not a bad ending, all things considered.

I was 2nd to last on the legacy thread. Dang you, sir Chadley Ballingham

Although it is rather fitting that he broke Bimmerfest

SlimKlim 02-27-2014 07:48 AM

Ouch Jesse. :(

Picking up where we left off, to reply to Jen's comment from the old thread:

Quote:

I tell you what, Joey...if Snowy ever dies, that is my next car. I have such fond memories of my MK2...such a nice package of size, elegance and speed. I only wish they had leather interior...that is the only thing it's missing. It's really just a re-badged A3.
They will have a leather interior option, it's usually called the "autobahn package." I test drove a '11 with leather and was impressed with the quality of everything, I assume the newer cars will only be nicer.

I'd want the fully loaded one with leather, nav, sunroof, heated seats, limited slip diff, more power and adjustable shocks, but that'll probably come out to $32-34k. The one I'd actually buy would probably be nav/sunroof/heated seats, manual trans and the limited slip to keep it around $28k. I'm just swagging that based on the current model pricing, they don't want to release any hard info on them until the last minute so the '14s keep selling.

EDIT: It seems appropriate the straw on the camel's back was Chad making some threadbare joke about a model of car he doesn't like. :p

B1MM3R 02-27-2014 07:52 AM

Yea im pretty bummed. Now just have to replace the timing belt etc and tag the e30 so can get the e36 in the shop.

bimmerbarbie 02-27-2014 07:56 AM

Just to clarify Chad, I hadn't even known for sure that it was you who broke the fest. When Ken told me the news I didn't even look, I just blamed it on you. Seriously.

I'd expect nothing less from you, Amber.

TechieTechie 02-27-2014 08:02 AM

Of our regulars, only Ken senior hasn't chimed on the new thread.

Hellllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllll llllllllo Ken! Where aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaare you?

Okay, now I really need to go back to work.

Oh, and Joey, could you buy a loaded one used? I'm just not a fan of the plaid.

SlimKlim 02-27-2014 08:09 AM

Probably if I waited until late 2015. The car itself won't be out until this summer and the performance package option will probably trail behind that by a few months.

I have the plaid now and I don't mind it, it's a lot less of a shock in the dead of summer or winter to get into them, and the plaid is so classic GTI.

They tend to offer really good lease rates on brand new models, and now that companies are writing the agreed residual value into the initial lease, it takes away the risk of getting screwed over at the end of it and also allows you to add up down payment + total of lease payments + residual value to get a total price on the car before you sign anything. Sometimes it'll work out to save a few grand by leasing then buying as opposed to buying outright. I'm going to explore that option as a possible way to pack in as many options without spending a totally exorbitant amount of money on a VW.

I'm not sold on the idea of getting one at all, just very, very interested in it. If I decide I can't live without one, and can't live without leather seats, then I'll just have to wait until I can easily afford it. The MKV ought to have a decent amount of life left in her, I just want to get rid of it before it starts needing bushings and cooling system parts in a couple years.

bimmerbarbie 02-27-2014 08:12 AM

I am omniscient.

I proclaim that Ken shall post quite soon here in this new land of OT.

You mean they AREN'T going to total your car? That's great, but I'm amazed. :yikes: The damage didn't look that bad, but the figure they came up with, well, I thought "there goes another one".

I'm here. Literally just got up, had a bad night....had nightmares about shooting pictures a whole day on what must have been the worlds longest roll of 35mm film, then couldn't rewind it to get it out, opened the back of the camera and ruined the entire roll. (who uses film any more???)

Well I don't know untill I hear back from his insurance. But either way I'm keeping and fixing the car even if totalled. Also opinion guys, my car got hailed on a year or so ago and my trunk got it the worst. Since im mostly likely painting the whole car I'm going to get another trunk if can find one. Here's one local for $150, thoughts on the spoiler?

hornhospital 02-27-2014 08:35 AM

I'd buy that. If you don't like the spoiler you can probably sell it for almost what you paid for the whole lid.

And you need to paint the car that red. :yikes:

jonesin 02-27-2014 08:37 AM

I've the same spoiler, so I may be a little biased, but I likes it!

Also, I'm assuming the hood and additional painting involved is the reason that your estimate is higher than mine was (three weeks to the day after I bought my car) from Bentley of Calgary for the exact same damage (minus the hood).

(The only reasons I went to Bentley for the estimate I made the asshat pay was because they are owned by BMW Calgary (and where they have their own bodywork done) and because the guy that hit me was an asshat from the get go).

B1MM3R 02-27-2014 08:42 AM

Yea its because the amount of paint for the hood, plus you have to blend it all to match.

I think im going to stay gold....to change color it would cost a whooooolllleeee lot more id imagine.

SlimKlim 02-27-2014 08:45 AM

Just ordered a new head unit for the E36. Got a Kenwood something or other that has an almost all black face, variable display color, iPhone 5 compatibility and a rear-mounted USB port for $131 out the door.

Pretty much the exact same features of the now-defunct one I bought in 2008, except that one was $300.

Eight Thirty 02-27-2014 09:02 AM
