What are these?

I've looked on google, this forum and think the two pieces on the trunk might be luggage racks that have missing horizontal pieces. I've only had the car a couple of days, so I'm not sure. It's my 2nd Z4 but I am in the process of catching up on this forum and refreshing this old brain of mine. :)

Thanks for your help.

It's for the hideous luggage rack.

Thanks ... that's what I was afraid of. I guess my next task will be how to take them off and what kind of body work will be needed once I get them off.

Interesting, it seems to me that the rack is mounted backward. I thought the "lip" should be at the rear to prevent luggage from sliding off during acceleration.

I don't have the rack itself, just the mounts. You are right though, that rack is mounted backwards. I never noticed it. Now to find out how to take the rack mounts off as I would rather have a "clean" trunk.

I must have been brain dead when I typed replies in this post. I knew from the time I saw them they would be screwed onto the trunk and once that trunk was open, the nuts holding that rack would be accessible with ease. How stupid could I be?? I'll so some further searching on the internet to see if there is a temporary fix if I take those brackets off and then have a good auto body shop fix the holes in the trunk. Would you leave them on in the meantime or take them off?

You could do color matching bumper plugs as short term fix. Bumperplugs.com. They will match car color.

I would remove them for sure

The rack is mounted correctly. The lip is on the forward side to prevent luggage moving forward into the seat area upon hard deceleration. This is for safety, and not a 'they put it backwards thing. The same/similar rack was used on the BMW Z3 as well. :bigpimp:

I guess it only matters if you are afraid of losing your luggage fro it sliding off the back or having it crash through the headrests/roll bars.

With the sponged bottoms of the rack I assumed there might be some adhesive that would pull up with the rack mounts. I had all the nuts and washers off and thought a small tap at the bottom of the mount bolts would be just enough to loosen the adhesive and they would pull right off.

The rack did not move.

I then had a wild thought maybe they added some permanent adhesive on that bottom of the mounts and IF I were to keep taping with the hammer to break that permanent adhesive how much paint would come with it?

So I attached the washers and nuts, tightened them back down and will find and read what my next option will be. I am calling the dealership tomorrow to see just how those mounts are attached and what will come off when I take them off.

In case you need it, used trunklid for sale. It's even silver.
