2019 330i ED

My local dealer told me that I cannot get 2019 330i ED because he does not have available slots and that I will have to wait for 2020 which he does not have allocation yet. Does this make sense? Or should I just run away from this?

Don't panic, you stepped in at the worst possible time - when the big model change is going on. I am assuming (yes, be careful with assumptions) that 2019 330i = F30 chassis and 2020 330i = G20 chassis. If that is the truth, I do not have good suggestions. I would certainly avoid first model year of brand new chassis (but that is just me, very unscientifically) which would mean at least one more year wait until you get a new car.

Or it could mean chasing excellent discounts you might get for F30 left on the dealer's lot. But you will probably not be able to get 2019 F30 and Euro Delivery.

So, check first and be 100% sure that 2019 = F30. If that is the truth, then you do not have good choices. I would suggest Euro Delivery at all costs, but that means waiting for the May 2020. At least.

Good luck!

Probably true. They're selling 2020 M340 already. I don't know when End of Production for the '19 330 is but would think that it'll be soon if not done already. Reach out to one of the board sponsors and see what they say. I was also under the impression that non-M cars didn't come out of dealer allocation and therefore wouldn't require one of their production slots.

The MY2019 3 Series is the G20 platform.

To clarify, did the dealer say that their production allocation is committed for the rest of MY2019 regardless of delivery choice, or only for ED? In other words, will they allow you (OP) to order a 2019 car for US delivery? (Remember also that the German plants shut down for most of August.)

IIRC, Euro delivery cars come out of the dealer's allocations when there is limited supply (e.g., ramp-up of a new model). Of those, BMW NA or AG may limit the fraction that can be sold for ED--I am unaware of any such limit but admit I am out of touch. The dealer is perhaps being conservative, too: They may want to ensure their lot inventory is well-stocked with popular selections for walk-in customers. Buyers willing for wait for an ordered car are often seeking "unusual" options, colorways, or combinations; many dealers--rightly or not--worry the buyer will walk away and stick them with a hard-to-sell car.

Another possibility is that the Welt is simply booked for the remainder of the model-year run. Dates typically have to be secured months in advance. Perhaps the dealer meant that the earliest available handover appointments are already into the 2020 model year?

Overall, not an overtly fishy statement by the dealer, but does raise a couple of follow-up questions...and perhaps some calls to check whether any other local(-ish) dealers can accommodate you.

Thanks, Zeichen.

Man, those who invented "Model Year" deserve GoT-style treatment :)

Yes, The G20 is being built in Mexico but also in Germany. Therefore, if you want a car that is built in Germany then opt to do Euro Delivery.

FWIW, I would go for the 2020 model. you will be able to place orders in June if everything goes like it normally does with BMW. the G20 2019 is first run. I would avoid it and go with the 2020 let them learn a thing or two of version 0 and go for .1. just my two cents.

also consider the depreciation, you are buying a 2019 at the end of the model year run. the 2020 will likely be out by the time you get it state side. Buying a new car has enough depreciation already, you really don't need to help it along ;).

I know you will read stuff on here about the economics of ED...really it is well worth your time it is such an awesome experience, I am sure you and your family will have a fantastic time. enjoy.

It makes sense. This happened to me with the F30 I ordered for European Delivery. I submitted my deposit and confirmed pricing in February 2013, and the order was finalized in late May-early June. My dealership, BMW of Silver Spring, indicated that the model year changeover would occur by the time I traveled to BMW Welt to pickup the vehicle (which was in August). That's indeed what occurred.

So I ended up getting a MY 2014 320i for the same price I agreed to for a MY 2013 320i.
