Pics from a trip over the Sierras in the X1 (Mineral Grey Metallic)

So I finally had a Saturday off, the weather was good and the X1 was full of gas. I grabbed a couple of cameras and headed for the Feather River Canyon. California Highway 70 runs over an alternate pass to Donner (I-80) that has pretty breathtaking scenery as it follows the Feather River. For any railroad geeks, they probably already know, but it is also the route of the famous California Zephyr. The last time I was on this road, it was on a VFR-800 and I remember having so much fun, that it was a natural to try out the new Bimmer on. While it's no M car or Z4, it holds its own on the twisties very well. I had a chance to drive pretty spritely for a few stretches :bigpimp: I love this car!

Enjoy the pics!

Well, the title of the thread might be a clue

Marvelous pictures, car and scenery. Can you share info about your photography? Camera, settings, etc?

floydarogers 06-24-2013 06:55 AM

Hadn't realized it, but Mineral Gray is almost the same shade as the gray bumpers - gives it a nice mono-chromatic look like the MSport.

Feather River, no?

Thanks! Camera for these was a Canon 5d mk2 with a 24-105L lens. The settings vary by photo, but generally I was using 400 ISO (I was alo photographing trains, so I like to have it ready for relatily high shutter speeds), 5.6 aperture, and somewhere around 1/1000 on the shutter. Basically aperture priority at 5.6 with -1/3 exposure compensation. All shot in RAW and processed in lightroom and CS6.

Yes, Feather River canyon

Great pics! I really like the color and X-line trim, though I'll probably get the M-sport. I'm holding out for a manual transmission though. My 2006 X3 is only 7 years old with 47K miles on it. It's a six-speed manual and I love it. If the X1 came in manual, I would have been sorely tempted to replace it early. The overall X1 package is perfect for my needs. Thanks for the pics!

Just now re-read the post's route description - guess I was too interested in the pics to read-for-comprehension the first time through! I managed to guess where it was from the bridge name "Storrie"... The Google Maps pics show enough detail to see exactly where you took the pic(s).

I really never grew up from being fascinated with trains. I will save the rest for a more train related forum.

Again, if you are from the Bay Area or just visiting, this is a great alternative route to Tahoe or Reno. It takes longer, but if your in a Bimmer, isn't that the point? :bigpimp:

This time of year? Best time to take the coupe! :p

P.S. Because of where we live, we come up the desert side of the Sierras, into Nevada, and come up the Nevada side.
