530i tuning options

Has anyone here had any tuning done on their 530i? I know the little motor will never be high performance without a lot of money, but a little extra go would be nice. I see a lot of piggy back tunes and an ECU tune or two, and can these be dyno tuned?

I'm not sure what the possible gains are, I hear these dyno out at an adjusted 280hp factory, and piggy back tunes seem to claim anywhere from 280hp to 315hp out of the car, but I haven't found anyone really doing any dyno testing or even acceleration testing to confirm this.

did you check Dinan? What engine family is the 530i?

Jack_88 03-20-2020 10:13 PM

It's the B48 twin scroll turbo 2.0 inline 4 cylinder.

I checked Dinan and I checked Racechip, they seem to offer a very similar product with similar results. Dinan rates their about 10hp higher, but so do they for stock, so it makes me think the difference was in atmospheric conditions. Still, I never quite trust self reported dyno results and was curious if anyone had any data of their own!

I personally would not touch it....it's a 530i after all is a comfortable luxo-cruiser and it has plenty of power for what it is. I would not risk altering the decent balance of smoothness and power in its little 4 banger engine. I rented a 530i quite few times, more than enough power to get easily in trouble with the highway patrol, FI makes road trips at altitude highways a breeze. Do not try to turn it in what is not...it ain't a sport sedan, it is a refined German Buick.

Well, I decided to order one after all. I'm not trying to make it into anything other than the same car with a bit more schnell when asked. I ordered the Racechip GTS Black, allegedly good for 315hp/325lbft. I'll check the performance of the car before and after, reporting back here so the review is on the record for others who may be interested. In theory, it should put the car a little bit behind the 540i. We will see if that holds up!

A lot of those high power and torque numbers come with the need for 93+ AKI gas. BMW's run as advertised on 91 AKI gas. A lot of places don't even have 93 AKIl

Jack_88 03-26-2020 03:30 PM

That's true, although I have seen dyno numbers from cars with 91 vs 93 and the difference across those has been something like 1-3%. Aside from that, I'm already suffering a deficit running 91 all the time, so in theory, my before and after should be about the same magnitude as anyone running 93 all the time. I'm not hitting the dyno, although I will be testing before and after 0-60 and 0-100.

Bone stock E46 M3's kept getting more powerful with better gas, up to about 96 AKI. Mine would ping on 91 AKI if I was lugging around at low RPM on a hot day. Downshift, and it was off to the races.

I've sort of turned into a hyper-miler. I did a supply run today in Frau Putzer's G01 X3 xDrive 30i. The first leg, 14 miles, was house to Sam's Club in light traffic. I got 40.2 MPG, and that's with the AC on. I had two more stops on the way home, and I had to turn the X3 around after unloading it and before putting it in the garage, lowering my round trip MPG to 31.1. I've had the MPG display adjusted to be accurate. It's only off about 0.25%.

Right now my order is held up at US customs due to requiring a commercial invoice, I don't know what the deal is with that. Racechip hasn't responded yet, not sure if this is a big problem or not.
