I don't understand why you don't want adhesive. The little clips come off. If I recall correctly, you push them down and towards the front windshield.

I fixed mine with black gasket seal. Remove the old stuff from the peg then add the new gasket adhesive on it. Hasn't fallen down in 2 years in the Texas heat.

My vote is the water pump is going bad. It could be a bearing in a pulley or just a bad belt but I'm still thinking your water pump is going bad.

I have this same issue. It just stopped one day and I ran a DVD cleaner yet nothing. It does read non-nav disks like one of music files. I've just left it for now and plan on doing a CIC retrofit...

You are correct. It is located under the driver side cabin filter.

Edit: Remove the filter, then the tray that it sits in. You will see it under that.
