I think the point is that the diesel would almost certainly get 10 mpg more than the gasser, controlling for other factors which make a big difference in absolute numbers but not in differential...

I'm a fan of MT's as well as diesel. No MT at the time so chose Diesel. Haven't really seen much evidence of gas engines "getting closer" except EPA fudging the numbers favoring gassers and hybrids.
