Thoughts of E36

A used M52 is going to be easier to find and far less expensive.
Add cams an and tune, power can be close to a 3.2L.
The 2.8L will not have as much torque, however as I recall the 2.8L revs quick....

The original CD43 is a good choice, though hard to find. It is a high power HU and is a BMW Business HU.

Yes. You might have to use some additional lumber to change the ramp angle and raise the nose of the trailer (back rear of pickup on to blocks) to further flatten the ramps.
