Are staggered wheels just for looks? Is there any evidence that a staggered setup improves handling/performance/traction/acceleration in any BMW?

I take it you mean "sledge" hammer? Unfortunately, I've been there and the sledge is probably the most effective way. Put a block of wood against the rim first so that you don't damage it....

No matter how good your tires are, you're going to have problems on ice. Just because a suggested speed is posted doesn't mean you can go that speed if conditions don't permit. Just use common sense...

If the car still runs, sell it in Canada. Parting it out is going to cost you dearly with the time spent advertising/negotiating/shipping, etc.

Moving to conventional tires and downsizing the rim will definitely soften the ride but probably not significantly. How many miles on the car? Perhaps swap out the shocks for Sachs?

Basically, the lower the number the more the wheel sticks out. The higher the number the more the wheel sits inside the wheel well. Rims with too low an offset can cause troubles with the outside...
