Cats get stolen in my area as well. Most thieves will target trucks and SUV's as they are easier to crawl underneath to cut them off. You should be fine with a 3 series as it is low to the ground.

I would keep it awhile longer. Though you might have to replace the water pump, thermostat and hose for a tune of $1000 to $1200. They usually fail between 70 and 90K. miles.
