e46 use m52tu..which is front sump and tube I think and doesn't fit in an e36.... so... I'd imagine people use a m52 pan from an e36 and the m52 pump and pickup tube. You can't just use any ol oil...

Whatever oil pan your useing has to match the car.. And watever oil pan that is determines what oil pump you use. If its a m50 oil pan, use an m50 pump. M52 oil pan, use an m52 pump.
